171st Anniversary of the First Batch of Pilsen Lager Was Also Celebrated in Hanoi

13 November 2013

Pilsen, November 11, 2013 – The brewing of the first batch of Pilsner Urquell has been celebrated all around the Czech Republic since October. But they celebrated in faraway Vietnam too. Hanoi’s Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant, the first one on the Asian continent, prepared a celebratory evening for its guests to commemorate this event. The popularity of Pilsen beer is on the rise in Vietnam, and that is also thanks to this restaurant, which was recognised by the elite Vietnam Economic Times.

Pilsner Urquell is very successful in Vietnam. Plzeňský Prazdroj has exported nearly 8000 hectolitres of beer during the last five years. And same goes for Hanoi’s Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant, the first restaurant of this concept on the Asian continent. Since its opening in August 2011, they have served nearly a thousand hectolitres of the Pilsen beer, and there guests drink about 400 beers a day.

And it was in Hanoi’s Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant where they organised a celebratory event to celebrate the brewing of the first batch of Pilsner Urquell, according to Czech example. Not only did personalities from the consulates, members of diplomatic missions and workers of international organisations come to the event, but also a number of Vietnamese celebrities. The guests were welcomed with excellently served beer and the story of its origin, and they enjoyed a contest for bottles of Pilsner Urquell.

“Many of our guests studied or lived in the Czech Republic and they love to remember those times. Some guests come here even four to five times a week. We are trying to complement the beer with Czech cuisine. We offer everything from Czech sausages to potato pancakes. The most popular are a fried cheese and a stomach soup,” says the owner of the restaurant, Ngo Hong Chuyen, who studied in the Czech Republic and loves Czech beer dearly. He reads about Pilsner Urquell regularly on the web, and he is constantly trying to come up with events to support the golden lager in Vietnam. For the opening of his restaurant, he invited senior marketing brewmaster Václav Berka to help him educate his personnel. Even his involvement in the celebrations of the first batch proves his passion for Pilsner Urquell beer and its history.

Pilsen beer is not just popular with its consumers. The Vietnam Economic Times, the most prestigious economic and financial paper in Vietnam, recognised the Pilsen beer in Hanoi’s Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant with the title “the Most Popular Beer on Tap” in a harsh competition with other imported brands on the Vietnam market, such as Budvar, Pauläner, Hofbrau, Krombacher, Bitburger and Sapporo.
