Tropical keeps its strong commitment to investment and innovation after almost 90 years of business as well as its support to the stimulation of the economy in the Canary Islands

The constant innovation carried out by the brand, created in 1924, has made it a landmark in the sector

Compañía Cervecera de Canarias is one of the main brewing companies nationwide and one of the engines of the economical and social development in Canarias.

Its activity revolves around the two factories in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y Santa Cruz de Tenerife, factories with modern production methods and labs that monitor and ensure the quality of its products and that are linked to its two emblematic brands, Tropical y Dorada.

Its activity supports directly or indirectly the creation of 7,000 jobs, and it participates as a share holder in several industrial companies in Canarias, giving priority to local suppliers in order to carry out its productive activity.

The Company, part of the international group SABMiller, has more than 300 businessmen from Canarias among its shareholders, 30% of the total and it has two members in the board of directors.

However, the consolidation of this activity has been the result of intense and constant work carried out through the years and whose origin dates back to 1924, when the brewing factory La Tropical in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was inaugurated by the businessman Cástor Gómez Navarro.

The activity of the factory starts with a small 50 HP diesel engine and 8 workers producing 2,000 litres of beer daily. A beer that could be enjoyed in an office open to the public in its headquarters in Canalejas Street, just behind the factory, where the beer was served with a wide variety of tapas.

The beginning of the Spanish Civil War meant the standstill of the activity, forcing the factory to be publicly auctioned. The company was bought by the businessmen Diego Vega Sarmiento, Vito Sánchez Jiménez and Miguel Curbelo Grondona, creating the Industrial Society of Canarias (Sical) in May 12th, 1939, with its headquarters in the facilities of La Tropical in Canalejas Street.

Sical was created as a company that produced and distributed beer and chocolate, prolonging the activity of the old family business created by Gómez Navarro.

Until 1954, when it became a corporation, Sical diversified its production with beer, chocolate, coffee and also fishing activities, a key sector in Canarias at that time.

Nevertheless, over the years, the production of beer became more and more important, so important that the name of Sical was overshadowed by the name of the beer it produced: Tropical.

In 1960 the new factory in Barranco Seco is opened. It has more capacity and new technologies, allowing it to greatly increase the production, going from 27,000 hectolitres produced in the old factory to 100,000 hectolitres in 1965. Due to this increase, a second expansion was carried out during the mid ‘70s. The production kept increasing until La Tropical became the main brewing company in Canarias overtaking Compañía Cervecera de Canarias (CERCASA), founded at the end of 1940s in Santa Cruz de Tenerife by a group of businessmen led by Maximino Acea Perdomo.

In fact, the boost of the touristic industry in the Islands and the gradual opening of the Spanish economy after years of isolation were the reasons why the two brewing companies in Canarias merged together, creating one of the biggest industrial groups in the Islands: Compañía Cervecera de Canarias, S.A.

This was a groundbreaking merge worldwide supporting a global vision in order to join forces; over time, it has allowed the company to be in the privileged place it is now.


Innovation and renewal


The importance acquired by Compañía Cervecera is supported by its constant concern about quality, innovation and renewal of its brands, as well as the investment made to improve its facilities despite the current economical crisis.

The most recent actions carried out in this field came with the launching of Tropical Limón, a new variety characterised by its low alcoholic content, barely 2%, and the addition of natural lemon. A variety that, on the other hand, has an important potential for expansion as it wants to satisfy the demand of a specific consumer segment, people between 18 and 40 years old, which chooses this drink for lunch and with snacks.

The addition of thermochromatic labels and cans, implemented permanently in most formats is another of the measures carried out.

To this it has to be added a limited edition of aluminum bottles for special occasions, as the 40th anniversary of the declaration of Vegueta as a site of historic and artistic interest, or the bottle created to honour the supporters of Unión Deportiva Las Palmas, the team the company sponsors.

Those activities highlight the commitment of the brand with the essence and the feeling of the society in Canarias.

But Tropical activity has gone beyond the beer production, investing in the revitalisation of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with events such as Fiesta Tropical Limón, which took place last June on the Alcaravaneras beach, or the Cold Party that took place on the Alcaravaneras beach and which brought snow to the beach in June.

Other activities carried out in recent years include the Guinness Record of the biggest towel in the world in 2010, as well as the music festival Tropical Fest, or the green bonfire that added a touch of colour to St. John’s night in 2011.

With these activities, Tropical wanted to support the image of originality and renewal of the brand, linking it to a cosmopolitan city like Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which is constantly transforming itself, contributing to diversify its cultural and leisure offer.


Quality and commitment with a sustainable development


The quality of its beers has been a priority of Compañía Cervecera. Since 1997, the quality control of all its beers is regulated by the ISO 9001 quality assurance 

To this it has to be added the environmental commitment carried out by the company in recent years, a commitment regulated by ISO 14001 environmental certification since 2003.

Its Labor Risk Prevention policy is also certified with the OHSAS 18001 certification, as well as the ISO 22000 food safety certification.

During the last quarter, which finished on March 31st, 2013, Compañía Cervecera de Canarias allocated €2,000,000 to activities related to corporate responsibility, a work that began 11 years ago and in 2006, was recognised with its first Applus+ in the category of big companies to the Excellency in the Companies in Canarias prize given by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and New Technologies of the government of Canarias and the certification institution Applus+.

In the environmental field, the Company has started several ambitious projects, allowing it to reduce its environmental footprint. In 2006, it opened the first private owned biogas facility in Canarias in its factory in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, a project that allows the company to generate electrical and thermal energy through the gases produced during the water treatment process, reducing the energy consumption and the emissions in the environment.

Other activities carried out in this area include the so-called “Environmental Turn”, consisting of the elaboration of organic fertiliser for the agricultural sector with all the bagasse, malt powder and yeast generated as by-products in the beer production. Through a complete recycling process of the waste produced, and other agri-food waste, it creates a high quality compost: an organic fertiliser for the agriculture that respects the quality of the land, doesn’t pollute the groundwater and doesn’t emit CO2 or methane to the atmosphere.

This initiative, as well as other environmental actions, has been key to increase its recycling and reusing rate until reaching a percentage close to 100%.

To all this it has to be added an ecological distribution system that includes the management of the transport elements and the containers and packaging in order to reduce the environmental impact in a fragmented and sensitive environment.
