Prazdroj Acquires Iso 22000 International Food Production Safety Certification

19 June 2009

Plzeň, 18 June 2009 - After a thorough preparation and successful completion of an independent audit performed by the renowned company Det Norske Veritas CZ, Plzeňský Prazdroj achieved a certification according to the ISO 22000 international standard, confirming Prazdroj's compliance with high standards for food safety - from ingredients delivery and storage to beer brewing and its final distribution. Last but not least, great emphasis is put on employees' expertise, safe work environment, utilization of advanced technology, all with the assistance of modern management methods.

"By acquiring the ISO 22000 certificate, we proved our ability to assure the harmlessness of foodstuffs in our entire production and distribution chain. Customers and consumers can therefore be sure that Plzeňský Prazdroj's products are produced with above-standard requirements for food safety," says Jiří Boháč, Plzeňský Prazdroj's brewmaster.

The certificate granting in 2009 was preceded by a thorough identification of all risks possibly affecting foodstuffs quality. Consecutive management system implementation according to ISO 20000 was, among other things, based on the principles of the HACCP system that has been certified in Prazdroj since May 2006. This large volume of work was successfully managed, thanks to the fact that the company was able to draw on other established management systems such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

"ISO 22000 is a new standard, and there are about ten food processing companies certified in the Czech Republic. Food safety management system according to this standard helps to discover serious risks and manage them effectively with respect to both food safety and cost efficiency. Implementation and consequent certification has changed approaches from retroactive testing to preventive way of thinking, in accordance with ISO 22000 (or HACCP). It offers a systematic approach covering all aspects of food processing chain from ingredients purchasing to product consumption," says Karin Ulrichová, DET NORSKE VERITAS CZ Marketing Manager.

All the world's major food producers are gradually switching to ISO 22000. Plzeňský Prazdroj joined this worldwide trend within all its breweries (Plzeň, Radegast, Velké Popovice) and all its commercial distribution centers.

In recent years, Plzeňský Prazdroj has bolstered up the quality of the products with investments into production facilities such as the new Prazdroj brewhouse or new cylindroconical tanks in Plzeň and Velké Popovice breweries. The company is also largely dedicated to increasing the sensory (taste) stability of the beer, e.g. with the newest technology of diatomite-free filtration by membranes, through the construction of new bottling lines in Plzeň and increasing the warehouse management capacity.
