Beer Trains To Sweden Continue, Also Planned For Greece
8 April 2009
Plzeň, April 8th 2009 - Twelve months ago, the historic first train carrying Pilsner beer set off from Western Bohemia for the Swedish market, and more railway shipments soon followed. In one year, Prazdroj transported more than 15,000 hl of beer to Sweden on rails, substituting more than a hundred trucks driving across all of Europe. The "Swedish" pilot operation proved useful, and this year Plzeňský Prazdroj prepares to use railway transport to export beer to Greece.
In 12 months, beer trains to Sweden transported 15,297 hl of Pilsner beer. In total, 50 wagons with Gambrinus beer in 0.5l bottles and Pilsner Urquell in 0.5l cans and 0.33l bottles departed from Western Bohemia. All of these transports traveled to a transshipment point in Orebro, Sweden.
In total, Plzeňský Prazdroj exported 33,500 hl of Pilsner Urquell, Gambrinus and Velkopopovický Kozel beers in 2008. Transport of this amount represents 246 trucks driving for 340,000 kilometers. Beer trains thus saved half of the truck rides, and the amount of kilometers traveled also decreased by 50 percent.
"Railway export to Sweden proved successful for Prazdroj and we will continue in it. Boxcars are also used for transports from Italy to Sweden, the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as from the Netherlands to Sweden. Not only do we save on transport costs, but we're also more environment-friendly. This year, Prazdroj wants to try additional railway export to Greece, where we sold almost 7000 hl of our beer last year," says Luděk Hraba, customer service manager for Plzeňský Prazdroj export.
Pilsner beer, especially Pilsner Urquell, has a very good reputation in Sweden, and the sales of Plzeňský Prazdroj brands went up by 24 percent in the last three years. Kegged Pilsner Urquell is drawn in about 80 restaurants in Sweden, and the serving quality and care of beer is on a high level: Sweden won the European Quality League, organized by Plzeňský Prazdroj for foreign restaurants with Pilsner Urquell on tap, in 2005, and continues to stay on top. In the Pilsner Urquell Master Bartender international competition, Swedish master bartender Alexander Bäckman ended up third in the world finals.
