Accra Brewery Supports Millennium Schools Project

31 January 2014

Accra, Ghana. 27/01/14: The Millennium Schools Project initiated by the Mayor of Accra has received a major boast from Ghana’s premier beer producer, Accra Brewery Limited, (ABL).  The company today presented a cheque for GHC 20,000 as its contribution to support moves by the mayor, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, to provide modern classroom blocks for public schools within the metropolis.

The Millennium Schools Project was kick-started to eliminate the school shift system which persisted as a result of inadequate school blocks within the public education system.  The idea is to construct 100 schools made up of three storey 18-classroom blocks, a science laboratory, a computer laboratory and a library.

Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs at ABL, Ms. Adjoba Kyiamah, who presented the cheque to the mayor, noted “the focus of Accra Brewery’s corporate social investment initiatives is on the positive transformation and uplifting of communities by supporting education, health and social development.  ABL strives to ensure that our work benefits as many people as possible whilst providing stability and security for future generations.”

She added, “To us, social investment is not an add-on to business activities, but at the heart of how we engage with the communities where our customers, employees, investors and suppliers live.  As a responsible corporate citizen, ABL has over the years extended a helping hand to communities, supported initiatives that have far reaching positive impact on society and has cooperated with other institutions to provide valuable support in the area of education.”

Ms. Kyiamah commended the AMA for succeeding in eliminating the school shift system within the metropolis and gave the assurance that ABL will continue to extend support towards projects that aim at making teaching and learning conducive and effective.

On his part, the Accra Mayor, Dr. Alfred Oko Vanderpuije said, “On behalf of the people of Accra, most especially the pupils and students of the metropolis, we would like to take the opportunity of this occasion to express our profound appreciation to the leadership and management of Accra Brewery Limited.”

Dr. Vanderpuije noted that three years ago they executed a strategy to end the shift system in Accra which resulted in the construction of over 600 temporary structures within three months. He said the children were housed in modern structures which consequentially led to the coining of the name Millennium City Schools. He also indicated that the 90th Millennium School will start in February and will be located at Gbegbeyise, one of the poorest communities within AMA’s jurisdiction.

“Today you have done the right thing by following the footsteps of other corporate bodies. Our commitment to complete this project is because we have big giants like you, Accra Brewery Limited, that we can depend on. We are thankful to you once again,” Dr. Vanderpuije said.
