SAB Training Institute Celebrates 20 Years of Skills Development Excellence

28 February 2012

Johannesburg. 28 February 2012. The South African Breweries (SAB) celebrates two decades of providing world class skills development at its very own corporate university in Johannesburg, this year.

The SAB Training Institute (TI), the Kyalami-based operation started in 2007, allows an opportunity to instil the organisation's highly regarded corporate culture and corporate ethics in its employees.

"Leadership by example is SAB's corporate brand essence, and this is woven into the culture the corporate university imparts to all delegates," says Tienie Ehlers, SAB's Human Resource Development manager.

Initially focused on technical training, today TI is responsible for the learning and development of the entire SAB value chain, from Marketing, Sales, Operations, Finance, IT, HR, Corporate Affairs, Manufacturing, Brewing, Quality, Packaging and Engineering. It caters for about 12 500 people a year, and since 2007 about 20% of this number has constituted people from outside companies who use the facilities to train their staff.

"Our learning methodology is based on Outcomes Based Education (OBE) principles and underpinned by the National Qualification Framework. We are recognised globally as being best in class," says Ehlers. "We are proud of our health and safety record and have maintained a NOSA 5 Star Platinum accreditation for 13 years running."

TI is also graded by South African Landscaping Institute for the upkeep of its beautiful 11.8 hectare site next to the Jukskei River, which is used for water-wise irrigation. The institute has seven conference venues, six breakaway rooms, five workshops with their own lecture rooms, a mini brew-house, packaging hall, laboratory and a three-star graded 102-sleeper hotel. It is run by 32 SAB staff members. "This is just one of the many ways which SAB is promoting an appreciation of beer culture in the country," Ehlers says.
