History

1879

Americans Jacobo Backus and Howard Johnston establish a brewery in the Rimac district of Lima.

1954

The Backus & Johnston Brewery Company becomes a national company and changes its name to Cervecería Backus & Johnston.

1996

The company merges with Compañia Nacional de Cerveza, Cervecería del Norte and Sociedad Cervecería de Trujillo to form Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston.

2002

The company is acquired by the Bavaria group.

2005

Bavaria becomes part of SABMiller.

In Peru, Backus are encouraging smallholder development by moving part of their hard yellow maize procurement from imports (predominantly from Argentina) to local crops grown by smallholder farmers.
