Tychy Brewery Selected by The Independent

17 March 2009

Tyskie Browary Książęce [Tychy Duke's Brewery] is one of the European breweries on the route of a beer trip organized by the daily The Independent.  The trip is a reward for the winner of a writing-travelling contest.

One of the biggest brewing companies in the world, SABMiller, in conjunction with the British daily, The Independent, organized a contest which was to select a promising and a gifted writer. Lorena di Nola, Italian translator, blogger and writer, residing in England, has won the contest. As a reward, at the end of February, she set out on a journey which was to include 7 most interesting breweries in Europe. So far, she has visited Holland, Hungary and Slovakia. There still remain the Czech Republic, Poland, Italy and Romania.

The roots of European art of brewing date back to over a thousand years ago, while the history of the role of beer in the development of European culture provides an informative survey of rituals, traditions, adages, and places still occupying a prominent role in contemporary societies. A-six-week-long trip, with all expenses paid, will be an excellent chance for the blogger to describe the phenomenon. The blog will be posted on The Independent's internet site throughout the progress of the journey.

The writer on the road
Winner of the contest, Lorena di Nola, grew up in southern Italy. Today, she resides in London. She studied English and Russian, hence she knows three languages. Travel is her life passion. For Christmas, her friends always present her with a guidebook to the country she has not visited yet. What does she know about Poland which she is scheduled to visit on March 17-20?

Lorena di Nola:
- I've heard about the Polish Party of the Friends of Beer and about a film trilogy Three Colours. Obviously, I know about the Polish Pope and the Solidarity. A few years ago, I visited Gdańsk; it is such a beautiful city. I was fascinated by people swimming in the Baltic Sea in spite of very low temperatures.

Although Lorena saw Tyskie many times in a London supermarket she shops at, she has never drunk this Polish beer. She will certainly have a chance to remedy that during her visit to the Tychy Brewery.
