Brews for Inclement Weather

16 December 2008

They taste best on cold days; the English call them "Winter Warmers." Strong beers are brews that are richer in aroma and deeper in taste than beers preferred in the summer. The former become more popular in Poland - every fifth brew consumed in our country is a strong beer.
Good quality strong beers of the lower fermentation are not unlike whisky: they warm up the tongue for a short time but leave a prolonged bitter-alcohol taste in the gullet and on the palate.  These beers can be easily served at the temperature of 10-11 degrees (higher than in the summer) which is beneficial for the taste. Lower temperatures decrease the gaseousness of the compounds which make up the flavor bouquet of the brew; hence by chilling it too much, we kill what is most precious in it.

The season to warm up
Strong brews are not to be downed in one gulp. The volume of extract, which may reach up to 20%, does not provide refreshment. Instead, they definitely warm up and that is why those beers are decidedly more popular particularly in the autumn and winter. Strong beer is unmistakable in taste and very distinct; it has a fuller bouquet which is the reason why it is preferred by beer lovers expecting unique flavor experience, particularly during the cold months of the year.
These additional features are derived at through the process of production. The proportion of the used components differentiates strong beers from those of a lower alcohol volume. It is mostly about malt which is employed to a larger degree, and that in turn leads to more condensed wort used for beer production. Leaving aside the technical side of it, one could say that strong beers make brews more concentrated in terms of flavor qualities and they simply have more of them. Therefore, they are often termed as "a brew with more beer taste."

Strong beer for a cold day
Currently, every fifth beer consumed in Poland is a strong brew. Dębowe Mocne (Oaken Strong), which made its way to shops in 2002, is the most popular representative of the kind. In March of the following year, the brand reached a record level of sales in the overall beer market - 4.8%.
This year (from January to October, 2008, data after AC Nielsen) it has a share of 3.29%.
Dębowe Mocne has been a leader of the strong beer kind. Its share in the market of strong beers is calculated on the level of 15.8% (data after AC Nielsen for January-October 2008).
Maciej Chołdrych, beer taster and beer expert:
"Dębowe Mocne is a perfect example of this kind of brew. This is the beer which combines the features of lagers, such as malt aroma and hop bouquet, with the features characteristic of heavier brews, namely the warming up characteristics, fruity fullness and roast caramel undertones. That is why it is such an attractive offer for those seeking full taste on a winter evening."
