Lima, January 30, 2013 – With the aim of contributing to the challenge of recovering Lima’s watersheds, Aquafondo and the National Water Authority (ANA) joined forces through an interagency cooperation agreement to promote joint technical work that will result in improved availability and quality of Lima and Callao’s main water sources.
Backus is the only private company that, along with The Nature Conservancy, Fondo de las Américas, The Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, Grupo GEA and the Sociedad Peruana de Derecho Ambiental, has been actively involved in the Fund Managing Committee for Watershed Conservation and Water Management in Lima and Callao (Aquafondo) since its origin in 2010.
This institution aims to mobilise resources to preserve the basins of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín Rivers, thereby ensuring a continuous supply of quality water for Lima and Callao and promoting a new water culture and the efficient management of resources.
The agreement was signed by the head of the National Water Authority, Hugo Jara Facundo, and the chairman of Aquafondo, Luis Alberto Gonzáles Zúñiga, at the National Water Authority headquarters in San Isidro, with the assistance of Backus and other members of Aquafondo.
Malena Morales, director of sustainable development and corporate affairs at Backus, said, “Our company has been committed for many years to responsible water management through sewer water management and water use reduction in a sustained production process. In this regard, we believe the agreement between ANA and Aquafondo is an important step forward that will allow for an improvement in water management and environmental quality, benefiting more than 9 million people in the city.”
