Compañía Cervecera reduces its ‘environmental footprint’ in Canarias by reducing water and energy consumption and CO2 emissions over the last year (Translation)

Canarias, May 23, 2012. - Today, Compañía Cervecera de Canarias participated in the Day of Eco-efficiency, Industrial Ecology and Socially Responsible Territories. They offered a presentation given by the Chief of Communications of Compañía Cervecera de Canarias, Luis Durango. He spoke about ways in which the company practices eco-efficiency. He explained that, for the last 10 years, the company has been implementing policies aimed to reduce water consumption, reduce energy and carbon footprint, the constant improvement in the design, the reusability and disposal of containers and packaging and the accomplishment of a zero-index waste.
In the case of water consumption reduction, Compañía Cervecera has achieved a reduction of 9% in the use of this limited resource in the Canary Islands in the last year. This achievement represents a total saving of 13,880 cubic metres. As for power consumption, a reduction of 4% has been achieved, as well as a reduction of 6% in CO2 emissions this year and of 30% over the last three years. This decrease in the consumption of these natural and power resources shows how committed the company is with the environment and sustainability.
"Some of the critical elements of eco-efficiency are the reduction in the intensity of material and power usage, waste reduction, increase of recycling and maximisation of renewable resources," explained Durango. Also, he stated that the shortage of some resources is a risk for the Canary Islands. For this reason, Compañía Cervecera makes a periodic evaluation of supply sources, suppliers' water usage, as well as a continuous analysis of each one its facilities individually.
Canary Islands government's Trade, Energy and Social Policy representatives participated in the event, along with representatives from Cabildo, Tenerife, Arico City, and members of institutions and companies who support environmental and social responsibility. Compañía Cervecera de Canarias' event provided an opportunity to send a message of responsibility with the environment and to reflect on the possible solutions linked to this type of environmental policies.
Among the measures established by the company, Luis Durango mentioned some of the concrete ones carried out, many of which do not require a financial investment, only a detailed analysis of the productive process that allows the implementation of small changes with exceptional results. Such is the case of the change done to the bottle conveyors lubrication system, which resulted in a remarkable reduction of water consumption. Also, reducing the nectar boiling time has significantly saved power and reduced CO2 emissions.
Luis Durango spoke about design sustainability (ecodesign), reusing and disposing bottles used by Compañía Cervecera. He mentioned that the difficulties undergone by the Canary Islands in regards to waste treatment make it a region in which the development of re-usable bottles is fundamental. "They are made once and used many times, thus saving in raw materials and energy in their manufacturing process. For this reason, this type of bottle is the most environmentally friendly," he indicated.
Also, he mentioned that when developing new formats, solutions to reduce environmental impact regarding containers and packaging are sought. Among other aspects, he indicated that glass bottle designs are being improved to make them weigh less and consume fewer natural resources. He also mentioned that new saving ideas are being developed, such as replacing printed plastics with transparent ones, thus achieving lesser ink and thinner consumption on the part of the suppliers.
Finally, he stated his support to the recycling industry of the Island in order to reduce the environmental impact caused by the massive import of non-recyclable containers. "This industry," he said, "would allow the creation of new jobs and financial resources."
