Every drop counted! (Translation)

11 April 2012

A cup of coffee with toast for breakfast, two pitchers of beer after work... It's not very much, but a significant amount of water goes into their making: 140 litres for a cup of coffee, 40 for a slice of bread and 45 litres for a litre of Pilsner Urquell.

"Why is Dreher Breweries interested in the matter? 85 to 95 percent of beer is water, so its composition highly influences the taste of beer. Almost every technological step in the brewing process requires water - so after seeing these facts and the numbers above, it was clear to us that one of the projects for the I. FMCG Greenovation Contest to be submitted by Dreher Breweries Ltd will present our water-saving measures," said Mandy Fertetics, Corporate Affairs and Sustainable Development Manager at Dreher Breweries.

In the past three years, the brewery has reduced its specific water consumption by 30 percent. Between January 2010 and November 2011, the brewery has saved 867,000 hectolitres (23 million U.S. gallons) of water, which corresponds to the average annual water use of nearly 1600 people*. The jury evaluating the projects for the contest awarded First Prize to Dreher Breweries Ltd for its detailed presentation of the measures leading up to this result, and also for the brewery's complex sustainability strategy.

Tibor Kovács, Regional Technical Director at Dreher Breweries, said at the awards ceremony: "The prize is a tribute to our fellow brewery workers, who not only consider water and energy-saving their obligation in the brewery, but are guided by that principle in their everyday lives as well, making us especially proud."

About the Prize:
The speciality magazine "Élelmiszer" has announced its FMCG Greenovation Awards for the first time. 23 projects were submitted for the contest. Most of the materials submitted were in the production category, and in this category First Prize was awarded to Dreher Breweries Ltd for its work called "Environmentally Conscious Water Management - Every Drop Counts!" The company submitted three more projects for the contest on the following subjects: Climate-Friendly Energy Management - Our Results Regarding Electric and Thermal Energy Use; Mastering Recycling; Reusable Packaging - an Environmentally Friendly Choice for the Consumers.
