7 February 2012

- The agreement will become effective this year and for the next two years and it also plans activities to bring closer the society to the reality of the club

- The action goes beyond and wants to promote common values shared by both entities, like local talent

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, February 3rd, 2012.- Tropical and Unión Deportiva Las Palmas have signed an agreement this morning according to which the brewing company becomes the official sponsor of the club for the rest of this year and the next two years.

This contract wants to promote the close relationship of the club with Gran Canaria's society through one of the brands with more support and history in the Island, like Tropical.

Compañía Cervecera de Canarias CEO Mark Tindall points out that it is an agreement that goes beyond a simple sponsorship; it wants to reinforce and favour a rapprochement with the values of the people of Gran Canaria through two of the institutions linked to the people along the years.

In this sense, he clarifies that with this initiative, "Tropical wanted to continue its support for the youth team and the local talent that Unión Deportiva defends, aspects that are part of the philosophy we have been defending throughout our history."

To bring to fruition these objectives, the agreement contemplates the development of several actions that will allow bringing together, even more, Unión Deportiva Las Palmas with the people of Gran Canaria. Among them, it's included the organisation of events that allow the interaction between fans, players and the club with different activities in which both parts are working nowadays.

With all this, the synergy and social projection will be favoured between Tropical, one of the most emblematic and oldest brands, and the reference club in the island.

Since 1924

Since the beginning of its activities in 1924, Tropical has been a brand directly connected with the industrial development of Gran Canaria, as seen in its first factory, in the Los Arenales neighbourhood, by the hand of Castor Gómez.

At that time it was a small family business, where beer could be enjoyed in a small shop open to the public in Canalejas street, behind the factory, where it was served with a wide variety of tapas.

The beginning of the Civil War meant the bankruptcy of the young company and in 1939 was out for auction and bought by Diego Vega Sarmiento, Vito Sánchez Jiménez and Miguel Curbelo Grondona, who founded Sociedad Industrial Canaria, Sical, dedicated to the production of beer, chocolate coffee and fishing activities.

In 1949, the beer production was at its lowest and in 1954, Sical became a public limited company aiming for a bigger growth. As a result, the Barranco Seco's factory opened in 1960, and it meant a fundamental change and a pledge for the renovation that translated in a qualitative and quantitative change in the development of the brand.

Afterwards, the opening of markets and the strong foreign competence led to the fusion of Sical and Compañía Cervecera de Canarias in 1993, the latter operating initially in Tenerife and it would be the foundations of the company now. Nowadays, Compañía Cervecera de Canarias has more than 300 business owners from Canarias among its shareholders and it's part of the international group SABMiller.

For its part, UD Las Palmas has been linked to the society of Canarias since 1949 and it has represented the football feeling of Las Palmas society after 31 years in the First Division.

Among its achievements there is a second place in the Spanish League, another second place in the King's Cup as well as three participations in the UEFA Cup. Nowadays it has 12,140 season ticket holders.
