Lima, October 19, 2010. This year, Backus Virtual School trained more than 170 elementary education teachers from Lima, Puno, Arequipa, Chiclayo, Cusco and Trujillo. Fundación Cisneros offered two courses from its "Teacher Upgrade Programme" (TUP).
Malena Morales, Backus Sustainable Development Director, stated that "Backus Virtual School aims to contribute to improving the quality of Peruvian education by helping teachers develop new skills and providing them with educational resources that will enhance their teaching practises with new technologies."
The courses that were offered online free of charge were: Teaching Environmental Education and Management of Administrative Skills Training:
- Teaching Environmental Education aims to make methodology strategies available to elementary teachers which will help them motivate students and involve them in the conservation of the environment, taking into account their experiences and interaction with the reality in which they live.
- Management of Administrative Skills Training is aimed at professionals who are responsible for organisational management in the education sector and is geared towards developing skills that will reduce the educational gap that separates us from more developed countries.
The Teacher Upgrade Programme (TUP) is one of Fundación Cisneros' educational initiatives. It is intended for Latin American elementary school teachers and aims to promote their ongoing development. The TUP offers free online courses and educational TV programmes so teachers can improve their teaching skills on subjects that are relevant to the development of communities. The programme also establishes alliances with local partners in each country. Thanks to the alliance that has existed between Backus Virtual School and Fundación Cisneros since 2004, a great number of Peruvian teachers have been able to participate in skills-development courses that will improve the education-learning process. Backus Virtual School selects the schools and teachers who will participate in the programme and monitors the process throughout the duration of the courses.
"I feel extremely pleased with the successful alliance we have with Backus Virtual School. This alliance has allowed Peruvian teachers, year after year, to participate in courses that complement their professional development. In addition, it allows them to participate in virtual communities that promote education throughout the region," affirmed Irene Hardy, TUP Director.
For the present period from October to January, TUP offers the following courses: Mastering and Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Elementary Education, and Teaching Educational Health. The former is coordinated and administered by the Universidad Latinoamericana y del Caribe (ULAC) and the latter by the Universidad Metropolitana de Caracas.
