SABMiller announces its Beer Taster of the Year 2010
20 January 2011
SABMiller (SAB.L), one of the world's leading brewers, has announced the winner of its 2010 beer tasting competition and once again the title has been taken by a woman.
Every year the company runs a contest amongst its 2,000 trained beer tasters to identify the most talented taste buds in the business. The winner this year was Carmen Herrera Benitez from Compañia Cervecera de Canarias, SABMiller's business in the Canary Islands.
The tasters' skill is assessed in 3 separate sessions: flavour identification which requires them to identify individual flavours that naturally occur in beer; scaling which demonstrates their ability to identify the strength of a flavour; and finally a session where the tasters are required to identify multiple flavours which have been added to beer.
Professor Barry Axcell, SABMiller's Group Chief Brewer said: "Our tasters are arguably the best in the world and allow us to deliver consistently high quality in all of our 200 beer brands. Carmen's flavour identification skills are clearly exceptional, but it is her dedication and commitment to beer tasting which really sets her apart. Whilst many people would dream of working as a professional beer taster, it's important to realise that it requires commitment as well as enthusiasm."
This is the third year running that a woman has taken the top taster role, having been won in the previous two years by Joanna Wasilewska, from SABMiller's Polish Bialystock brewery.
The annual competition pits the top beer tasters in each of SABMiller's six regions - Europe, Africa, North America, South Africa, Latin America and Asia - against each other to see who has the perfect palate. It is adjudicated by FlavorActiv, the company which supports SABMiller's Global Taste System - which measures the quality of SABMiller's beers around the world.
The finalists were:-
Africa - Stephen Moyo of Bulawayo Brewery, Delta Breweries , Zimbabwe
Asia - Shamim Hamza of Skol Breweries, India
Europe - Carmen Dolores Herrera Benitez of CCC in the Canary Islands.
Latin America - Roberto Diaz Cortez from Cerveceria Nacional of Panama.
North America - Kristy Zigich of the Golden Brewery in Miller Coors.
South Africa - Steve Liebetrau of the Prospecton Brewery, SAB
