23 August 2010

[Stellenbosch: 23 August 2010]: The University of Pretoria won the third Intervarsity Beer Brewing Challenge at the Stellenbosch Lodge on Saturday 21 August 2010.

The University of Pretoria student brewers beat teams from seven other universities and won in two out of three categories to land the 2010 grand championship. The Intervarsity Beer Brewing Competition was organized in partnership with the South African Breweries (SAB), the FoodBev Seta and the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD).

Each team member from the University of Pretoria received R2 000 donated by FoodBev Seta - IBD section, together with a team prize of R10 000 from SAB Newlands Brewery for further development of the University microbrewery.

The University of Pretoria team beat the other teams to become the ultimate Intervarsity Beer Brewing Champions, winning in the best ale and speciality beer categories, while the University of Limpopo won in the best lager category. The teams brewed their beer prior to the event using microbreweries on their own campuses.

"We are so pleased to have won the overall title for the best beer brewed. It's been an awesome learning experience for us to be part of this challenge while having fun too. The prize money we've won will be put to good use to improve our microbrewery at our campus," said Mike Heydenrych from the University of Pretoria brewing team.

The judging panel was made up of SAB Brewing experts together with members of the Home Brew Club in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

"We at SAB are very excited about the event. This is an annual event which we aim to grow each year. We hope all major Universities will soon have their own microbreweries which their students can benefit from as part of their scientific studies," said Denis da Silva, SAB trade brewer who was organizer of the event.

"The uniqueness of the initiative is for the students to be educated and have fun at the same time, and showing their skills in a national brewing competition," he continued.

At the awards ceremony, team leaders from each university shared their own experiences on how they built their plants over the years using their own ingenuity and shared the problems they encountered while brewing the beers.
