Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, June 5, 2010 - Today, Tropical, a Canarian beer brand, has set a new Guinness record and the first achieved in Gran Canaria. It has created the world's largest beach towel in Las Canteras beach of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria during an activity in which thousands of locals participated.

This new global record, which beat the one achieved by Cyprus in 2008, has been certified by the representative of the Guinness organization, who checked the measurements of the gigantic beach towel of more than 2,240 square meters.

Once the beach towel was completed, about 1,000 people more have had the opportunity to join in this initiative. In fact, registration for the participation in the event was a success since all entries were taken in only 72 hours.

Tropical, a Compañía Cervecera de Canarias brand, received the help of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria municipality for this event since the goal was also to gather support for the candidacy of the city to the title of European Culture Capital 2016.

Thousands of people gathered on the beach of Gran Canaria to witness the achievement of the record. The event took place from 10:00 to 14:00 hours, but the giant towel will remain in Las Canteras until this evening for all of those wishing to see the new Guinness record.

Making the beach towel, which was entirely manufactured in Gran Canaria, required more than 25 people working for 15 days. A team of 50 people participated in putting it together, which started the day before. Once completed, the towel weighted over a ton.

Five hundred of the first fortunate 1,000 event participants received a free entry to the TropicalFest Music Festival, which will take place on June 12 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. All participants were given a t-shirt for their participation in the Guinness record, as well as a small picnic basket with Tropical beers.

The piece will be donated to Obra Social de Acogida y Desarrollo, a charitable entity of Gran Canaria, as well as to the city of San Juan de Dios of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which later will be responsible for recycling the piece.

Part of the beach towel will go to use in homes, shelters and other centers. Also Obra Social de Acogida y Desarrollo will allocate another part to the confection of individual towels which will be sold at low prices to raise funds to be reinvested in the funding of social programs that the organization is aiming to carry out.
