History
- 1960s
Botswana Breweries Limited (BBL) is established in Francistown to brew Chibuku, the traditional opaque beer made from sorghum and maize.
- 1970s
Sechaba Brewery Holdings Limited (SBHL) is set up by the Botswana Development Corporation ( BDC) to hold investments in the beverage sector on behalf of the citizens of Botswana.
- 1977
SAB is invited to become the strategic partner of the BDC by taking a 40% equity stake and management control of both Kgalagadi Breweries (Pty) Limited (KBL) and Botswana Breweries (Pty) Limited (BBL).
KBL begins bottling Coca-Cola products under a standard international bottling agreement with the Coca Cola Company. KBL also imports and distributes wines and spirits from South Africa through Segwana Liquor Distributors.
- 1989
SBHL is listed on the Gaborone Stock Exchange, resulting in an effective free float of shares in KBL and BBL of some 35%.
- 1995
A separate bottling plant is established in Gaborone for sparkling soft drinks.
