Backus Ends the First Year of the “4e: Camino al Progreso” Cycle with 480 Trained Winemakers

Lima, January 7th, 2013.- Recently, Backus held the closing ceremony of the first year of its programme “4e: Camino al progreso”, where 480 winemakers were trained. This regional initiative from SABMiller intends, in the case of Peru, to train 12,400 entrepreneurs nationwide in business management and family economics management, in a five-year period.

The 480 recipients are owners of wineries located in the Ate Vitarte (27 winemakers of Huaycán), Los Olivos (27 winemakers), Pachacamac (54 winemakers of Manchay), Puente Piedra (79 winemakers), San Martín de Porres (132 winemakers), Villa El Salvador (108 winemakers of) and Villa María del Triunfo (52 winemakers of) districts.

In this regard, Felipe Cantuarias, Backus Corporate Matters Vice President, stated, “This proposal, aimed at our winemakers, is intended to strengthen their entrepreneurial abilities, ensure the sustainability of their business and improve their quality of life, as well as their families’, and make a difference in these marginal urban areas through work coordinated with the wineries of the area that have a high growth potential.”

The training is divided in four stages, carried out in a 12-week period: Bodeguero Responsible (Responsible Winemaker) (Management tools to acquire the basic abilities and ensure the existence of the business), Bodeguero Sostenible (Sustainable Winemaker) (Financial tools to advance in the development of the business and strongly contribute to the improvement of their family), Bodeguero Excelente (Excellent Winemaker) (Tools to acquire abilities that allow the diversification  of products and services) and Bodeguero Líder (Leader Winemaker) (Personal leadership tools to turn the winery in a meeting point for the development of the neighborhood).

Each stage has several learning modules that include classes as well as counselling in the selling point which allows the winemaker to apply the knowledge received in the classroom to the specific reality of their winery. It total, each winemaker received 15 hours of classes and 18 hours of customised technical assistance, organised by institución Fundes Perú, which is an ally and programme operator, in subjects such as Selling and Product Arrangement, Marketing, Customer Service, Business Finance, Family Finance, Costs, Registers, Legal Matters, Responsible Business and Leadership, among others.

It is worth mentioning that, in the frame of the finance and tax module, 24 winemakers attended the SUNAT accompanied by their advisers, to manage the devolution of their Percepciones, a tax paid in advance applied to some products like malt beer, water and sodas, among others. In total, these winemakers managed to recover S/. 49,345 Nuevos Soles, thanks to the program 4e from Backus.

The entrepreneurs that attended this closing event were the ones with highest marks in their classes, who also received an additional module about Entrepreneurial Leadership with the purpose of promoting improvement plans in their communities. This group, selected among 140 people, received a certificate of participation for its commitment and leadership, and they also had the opportunity to visit the Backus plant and get to know how the best beer brands of the country are made.
