The Eco-efficient Management of Compañía Cervecera Allows it to Reduce the Consumption of Water by 17% and the Consumption of Electricity by 7%

- The company maintains its support to the policies that insure a sustainable management with a lower impact on the environment of Canarias

- The decline in CO2 emissions has been another goal of the company, reaching a reduction of 21% since 2010

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, June 4th, 2013.- Compañía Cervecera de Canarias reassures its support of the environment through the implementation of an eco-efficient management that focuses on the improvement of water consumption, reduction of energy consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as promoting recycling and the reusing of packaging.

Coinciding tomorrow with the celebration of World Environment Day, the company wants to highlight the importance of taking care of the environment as one of the priorities of its commercial activity, focusing on an efficient management of the resources that allow further progress in the conservation of the environment.

Among the actions developed in this sense is included the efficient use of water, with a lower consumption in the last few years. In this regard, this year the company has used 3.89 hectolitres of water for every hectolitre of beer produced, a quantity slightly smaller than the 4.29 hectolitres used last year and the 4.73 used in 2011, which allows an accumulated reduction of 17% in the last three years.

Also, Compañía Cervecera wants to keep improving the results in this field and its goal is to use 3.5 hectolitres of water per hectolitre of beer produced by 2015.

Other measures with which the company has been working focus on the efficient use of energy, where it has experienced a reduction of 7% in energy consumption in the last three years, from 137.2 mega joules per hectolitre in 2010 to 128.34 nowadays.

This was accompanied by a reduction of 21% in the emissions of CO2 in such period.

Waste

Besides theses issues, Compañía Cervecera has implemented several actions directed towards waste management, currently recycling 97% of its waste.

The use of the bagasse for animal feed and compost for agricultural use, as well as the complete separation of the disposable components of packaging for recycling, are some of the measures carried out in this sense, as well as awareness campaigns developed by the company.

On the other hand, the use and reuse of the waste to promote the care of the environment is another line of action that is a priority for Compañía Cervecera, allowing it to reach 97% of recycling in the last year.

In order to do that, it has promoted the use of reusable containers, where it has become a benchmark, as it commercialises 59% of its products in reusable containers, exceeding the average of the sector in Spain by 12 points.

The reduction of the impact of the packaging is another aspect considered, materialised in the reduction of the weight of returnable bottles by 17%, the analysis of the packaging materials depending on their environmental impact, as well as the elimination of includable materials, painted plastics and PVC in the lids of the products bottled in the 33 centilitre bottles.

On the other hand, Compañía Cervecera has included environmental factors in some of the actions of corporative volunteer programs that are carried out. This is the case of the actions developed in Aldeas Infantiles of El Tablero and La Laguna, where the workers of the company have carried out the cleaning and maintenance of gardens, as well as the preparation of the land and the planting afterwards.

To this, other actions performed in previous years have to be added, like the cleaning of El Médano beach and the freeing of shearwaters.
