India: Taking testing to truckers in India
SABMiller constantly monitors the prevalence of HIV/Aids in each of the countries in which it operates. In India, though the national prevalence remains below 1%, we know that some groups are more vulnerable than others due to the nature of their work. The stigma surrounding HIV/Aids is also a problem: there are often barriers to talking about sexual behaviour (especially with colleagues and in front of fellow workers) and, in some cases, there is a fear of testing.
In response, SABMiller India launched Project Humsafar in 2007 with the aim of raising awareness of HIV/Aids among the truckers who distribute our beer. These are a potentially vulnerable group as they spend months at a time away from their families, travelling from one state to another. Catering for often illiterate drivers, the programme facilitates group discussions, distributes free awareness materials, demonstrates and distributes condoms and offers games, one-to-one sessions and talk shows.
Botswana: Providing access to counselling and testing
In Botswana, where over 350,000 people live with HIV, Kgalagadi Breweries (Pty) Limited launched Project Tshelang ('Stay alive') 11 years ago to help reduce the spread of HIV/Aids.
The project aims to prevent new infections and to manage the spread of HIV by providing employees and their families with education, awareness programmes and access to voluntary counselling and testing. There are currently 74 trained and active peer educators – roughly one for every 10 employees – who help change attitudes and behaviour among their colleagues.
Honduras: Peer educator programme helps to prevent HIV/Aids
In Honduras, the work of Cervecería Hondureña in preventing HIV/Aids extends not only to employees but also to the community and those in the value chain.
The company has developed a peer educators programme which aims to raise awareness of HIV/Aids, reduce stigma and encourage voluntary testing.
Over the last year, 106 employees received peer educator training in collaboration with specialists from the Ministry of Public Health and the NGO, CIADES (Centre for Research and Action for Development).
By raising awareness, the programme benefits more than 3,000 employees of the company at its 14 locations along with their families, neighbours, friends and acquaintances.
South Africa: Awareness programme averts HIV/Aids infections
In partnership with the National Department of Health, the South African Business Coalition on HIV/Aids and the Society of Family Health, SAB (Pty) Ltd has joined the national condom distribution programme to help the government extend its distribution reach to non-traditional outlets, especially taverns.
The company has provided its infrastructure, delivery trucks and extensive distribution network with the long-term aim of reaching 16,000 local taverns over the next five years, distributing more than 845 million condoms and averting 1.6 million new HIV/Aids infections.
To date it has reached over 7000 taverns, distributed more than 10 million condoms and helped to avert 20,914 new HIV/Aids infections1.
1 The HIV/Aids aversion rate is calculated according to a study by John Stover (founder and president of Futures Institute) which claims that for every 500 condoms distributed, at least one new infection is averted. This indicates that condoms are highly effective in protecting individuals against contracting HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
