Waste

Working towards zero waste operations

Our response

Valuing our waste

Much of the waste we generate has a value and can be reused. This may be through the generation of energy, by creating new products (recycled glass bottles from broken glass, for example), or for agricultural purposes such as fertilisers or animal feed. We encourage all our businesses to operate in a way that minimises the amount of waste sent to landfill, with the ultimate goal that they become a zero waste operation.

Progress against 2012 targets

2012 Target Progress
Investigate the external reuse options for kieselguhr (a filtration medium) and ash in Colombia to prevent them being sent to landfill

Bavaria, in Colombia, commissioned dewatering equipment to process kieselguhr for brick manufacturing.

Pilot project established in Colombia in partnership with the national composting association to trial the use of effluent sludge in the manufacture of soil conditioner.

Continue to investigate and share learning across the group on how brewery waste can be innovatively reused and recycled

Best practice shared across the group on waste management.

2013 targets

  • Continue to investigate and share learning across the group on reusing and recycling brewery waste (such as kieselguhr and spent grains)
  • Establish a new 2015 waste to landfill target at MillerCoors as it has met its target to reduce waste to landfill by 50% by 2015 three years early
