Colombia: Fleet optimisation reducing vehicle emissions
In Colombia, Bavaria has been focusing on optimising its distribution fleet since 2006 by finding ways to move products more efficiently from its breweries to its retailers through better scheduling of deliveries and increasing delivery capacities.
This has allowed Bavaria to consolidate many of its deliveries, reduce the number of routes taken and, consequently, reduce the distance travelled by the vehicles transporting its products such as Aguila and Club Colombia. This has been reflected in a reduction of 45,000 tonnes of CO2e a year.
Low energy heating
In July 2010, we launched an innovative new technology which our technical teams have been researching and testing for several years, that can dramatically cut the energy required to heat unfermented ‘wort’ as part of the brewing process. In a typical brewery, the energy used for boiling can account for up to 40% of the facility's total energy requirements, so this new technology has the potential to significantly reduce both fuel costs and the carbon emissions.
Following extensive testing, the new technology has already been installed in South Africa and parts of Africa, with long term plans to roll it out globally. At one brewery in Tanzania, the new technology has resulted in the shutting-down of an oil-fired boiler. This has led to a reduction in emissions and an estimated saving of $500,000 per annum.
Czech Republic: Reducing emissions in and outside the brewery
Our brewmasters in the Czech Republic are dedicated to maintaining the integrity of Pilsner Urquell, the original pilsner beer first brewed in 1842. With no compromise on the quality and provenance of Czech brewing, we have introduced a range of energy saving measures to reduce carbon emissions across Plzeňský Prazdroj.
As a result, the business has achieved an energy reduction of over 8% per hectolitre of beer produced in the last twelve months. Our brewery in Pilsen, which brews Pilsner Urquell has performed better than average as energy use has reduced by over 10% per hectolitre over the same period. Amongst others, energy saving measures have included C02 heat recovery which enables heat to be recycled in the brewery and the shortening and insulating of steam pipelines.
