Netherlands: 'Lean and Green' deliveries in the Netherlands

As part of the Dutch government's Lean and Green initiative, our business in the Netherlands undertook to cut CO2 emissions from its distribution activities by 20% between 2007 and 2012. Other leading organisations making the same commitment included Hema, Coca-Cola and Douwe Egberts.

Royal Grolsch took a number of actions including changing its deliveries to coincide with times when the roads are quietest, typically at night. This has helped to reduce emissions by almost 22%.

Czech Republic: Reusing carbon dioxide at Pilsen brewery

This year the Plzeňský Prazdroj, a.s. brewery in Pilsen commissioned a CO2 recovery station to capture and reuse CO2 and reduce on–site emissions. In the first year, the brewery saved 280 tonnes of CO2.

The emissions created during the fermentation and brewing processes are collected and liquefied. They can then be reused to create the controlled atmosphere needed for pumping and bottling beer. Not only does this initiative reduce CO2 emissions, but the return on investment is estimated to be only two years.

This year the company also undertook a number of initiatives to reduce the amount of electricity it uses – for example, updating 257 light fixtures and installing smart dimming technology. In total, these initiatives will conserve an estimated 257,000 kWh of energy; equal to the yearly energy consumption of over 400 average households.

South Africa: Eco-friendly fridges for retailers

SAB (Pty) Ltd is working to reduce emissions across the value chain. This year, the company developed energy-efficient and environmentally friendly LED lights and energy management devices (EMDs) which are now used in every new fridge that SAB (Pty) Ltd supplies to its retailers.

The EMDs reduce the electricity consumption of the fridge by up to 30%. The new LED lights last twice as long as the current fluorescent lights while also making the product in the fridge more visibile and reducing the harmful effects of disposing of fluorescent lights.
