Voltic sponsored tricycles

Social investment has been, and remains, a core value of Voltic Ghana Limited. The bottled water business runs a number of corporate social investment (CSI) initiatives encompassing sport, local festivals and partnerships with NGOs.

Recently, Voltic sponsored a school transportation project for children from the Koforidua, Ada and Aboabo communities in the Eastern region of Ghana. These children are often unable to attend school owing to the long distances they must travel each day by foot.

We increasingly adopt an approach to reducing HIV/Aids that has a wider focus than just our employees. As a result of testing couples in their own homes, for example, Nile Breweries in Uganda has provided VCT for almost a quarter of employee's spouses over the last two years.

The stigma and fear associated with HIV/Aids can often make discussions with spouses and dependants extremely difficult, but disclosure is critical to ensure family members receive testing and, if necessary, treatment. In addition, research has shown high incidences of HIV among couples; married people account for about 65% of new infections.

Saving water and costs

Nile Breweries plant in Uganda

In August 2008, Nile Breweries in Uganda had a water efficiency ratio of 7.5 hl/hl. Realising that this could be reduced to minimise both costs and the brewery's impact on the environment, Nile Breweries launched a profit improvement project (PIP) to improve its water efficiency.

A multidisciplinary team was formed which incorporated members from the packaging, brewing and utilities departments. This team then analysed past data to determine realistic water reduction targets and timelines. This led to the identification of a number of areas where improvements could be made and an action plan was developed.

To improve water efficiency, a number of capital projects were implemented. These included the recovery of filter-backwash water for floor washing in non production areas and gardening, machine cooling water recovery and reuse and improved metering. Now, approximately 10% of water in the brewery is able to be recovered and reused.

In addition to capital projects, Nile Breweries has worked hard to raise awareness of the importance of saving water amongst employees. For example, new cleaning practices have been introduced which involve using buckets and water squeezers instead of hoses. Furthermore, each department now reports weekly on their water usage to ensure performance matches the targets.

As a result of these initiatives, Nile Breweries has substantially improved its water efficiency performance. Over the last year, the average water ratio was 4.8 hl/hl.

Launching KickStart

Swaziland Beverages launched its KickStart programme in April 2010. It is the third country within SABMiller to launch the programme in Africa, after SAB Ltd in South Africa and Kgalagadi Breweries in Botswana. Similarly to these programmes, young entrepreneurs enter a competition to receive training, and for a select few, financial grants and mentoring to help them develop their business.

The program began with a launch event where the Hon.Prime Minister Dr Sibusiso Barnabas Dlamini was the guest speaker. The launch was attended by a number of representatives from Swaziland Beverages, government, media and local businesses. Following the launch, over 1,000 applications were received. After a screening process by the judges, the top 20 candidates were awarded a place on an intensive Business Management course in October 2010. The course covered topics such as financial management, strategic planning and entrepreneurship.

Following the training, with the help of mentorship from a local consultancy, the top 8 applicants presented their business plans in front of the panel of judges. The top 3 were then selected as winners and provided with a grant to help establish their business.

Greening Mbarara

Nile Breweries Limited has initiated a tree planting initiative programme, “The Green Towns Project” in Mbarara, western Uganda. In October, employees were joined by local municipal and army representatives and planted over 300 trees along Mbarara’s main street and in the suburbs.

Mbarara was the fourth major Ugandan town to benefit from the “Green Towns Project”, following previous tree planting by Nile Breweries in Arua, Gulu and Hoima. The Mbarara Mayor Mr. Wilson Tumwine acknowledged the Nile Breweries’ green campaign, saying it was in line with the town’s environmental plan: “These trees will help us in reducing the carbon emissions that are generated by human activity .

In addition to the ‘Green Towns Project‘, Nile Breweries has also supplied over 6,000 tree seedlings to sorghum farmers to promote water and soil conservation on their farms.

Engaging with suppliers

In Novermber 2011, Nile Breweries hosted its inaugural Suppliers Day. A number of suppliers and key stakeholders were invited to the brewery in Jinja for a brewery tour, a briefing from the Nile Breweries management team and a question and answer session.

MD Nick Jenkinson also presented at the event on what Nile Breweries has achieved across the ten sustainable development priorities, also highlighting how they are similar to Uganda’s development agenda.

Following the success of the day, Nile Breweries now aim that this will become an annual event.

Supporting women's empowerment

In October 2010, Maluti Mountain Brewery hosted a conference for around 100 spouses and partners of employees. The theme of the day was women's empowerment to promote self awareness, self-reliance and financial independence. External specialists addressed entrepreneurship, family law and information on responsible alcohol consumption based on our internal alcohol training programme.

Named after Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro is one of Tanzania’s most popular beer brands. The brewery in Dar es Salaam in which it is produced lies in an area of potential water stress. As part of our Water Futures global partnership, with WWF and GIZ (an agency that acts for the German government to promote economic, ecological and social development), we have undertaken a project to understand the potential water scarcity and quality risks affecting this brewery and the local area. This includes risks from population growth, deteriorating water quality and impacts of climate change.

Supporting the Southern African Growth Corridor to source local barley

Farmers in Tanzania

In Tanzania, in the past there have been limitations to growing barley such as the lack of modern farming techniques, basic farming equipment and variable rainfall patterns. These challenges have led Tanzania Breweries (TBL) to establish its ‘Project Saidiana’ programme which aims to increase the local production of barley.

Last year, TBL signed agreements with ten organised groups consisting of approximately 170 smallholder farmers from the Southern Highlands region. In 2011 TBL hope to procure 1,700 tons of malting grade barley from these farmer groups.

Project Tshelang

Project Tshelang launching campaign at Botswana

Over the past decade, Kgalagadi Breweries Limited (KBL) and Botswana Breweries Limited (BBL) have consistently made calls to all stakeholders to tackle HIV/Aids prejudice and remove barriers to effective treatment. This year, KBL and BBL re-launched Project Tshelang, the first initiative of its kind in Botswana when originally launched in 2001. Tshelang means “Live” or “Stay alive” and provides a consistent set of guidelines for managing employees with HIV, Aids and other chronic diseases to ensure the fair and consistent treatment and support for all KBL and BBL employees.

Raising awareness on World Aids Day

In Tanzania, though progress has been made in reducing the number of people affected by HIV/Aids, levels remain high; in some areas of the country the prevalence is as high as 15%. On World Aids Day in December, Tanzania Breweries took the opportunity to organise events to raise awareness of the disease.

TBL has started a vital programme to remind its employees on the importance of taking regular tests and taking precautions against exposure to HIV infections. As part of the programme, TBL cooperates with health education counsellors from local health centres to ensure awareness of HIV/Aids such as how infections can occur and safe sex. In addition, TBL provides employees with free antiretroviral treatment as well as training on other diseases such as malaria and diabetes.

As well as employees, TBL has also established a health unit which provides care for residents in areas around the factory to raise awareness and distribute medication for HIV/Aids.

KickStart

In Botswana, it is estimated that more than 80% of new business enterprises fail within two years, often due to poor management methods. In response, in 2004, Kgalagadi Breweries and Botswana Breweries launched KickStart with an aim of creating a culture of entrepreneurship among young people between the ages of 18 and 30.

The programme promotes business awareness and builds capability among young people through training, providing grants as start-up capital and mentoring and assistance during the business set-up phase. A mentor is commissioned to monitor grant beneficiaries and to help them to run their businesses prudently for the first twelve months.

Kicking out malaria

In October 2010, National Breweries in Zambia launched its first ‘Kick Out Malaria’ month across its five breweries. Malaria is endemic throughout Zambia and is a major public health problem. Latest evidence from the World Health Organisation (WHO) states that there are approximately 2.9 million cases of malaria diagnosed each year in the country. Although the overall number of cases has decreased in recent years, the WHO research shows this is not the case for children under the age of five.

The control of malaria has been identified as one of the Zambia’s main public health priorities and is a significant part of Ministry of Health’s National Health Strategic Plan. In support of this initiative, ‘Kick Out Malaria’ was officially launched by Ms Wamulume on behalf of the Zambian Ministry of Health.

Ms Wamulume said “Management should be commended for the efforts made because they have shown that their people matter even in hard economical times when many companies are struggling to meet budget”

The launch also included performances by a local cultural group called Mutende, an ensemble that performed dances and a sketch on Malaria prevention. As part of this awareness raising programme, National Breweries also provided all 679 employees insecticide treated mosquito nets investing over K30million.

Creating local employment in Sudan

White Bull Lager is the flagship product of Southern Sudan Beverages Ltd (SSBL) – the first brewery in Southern Sudan for 50 years. The brewery is the only local manufacturing plant in the city of Juba, and produces one of the few new formal consumer beer brands.

SSBL commissioned its brewery in South Sudan in 2009 and invested US$37m to build the facility in Juba. To date, its operations in the region have created employment for 200 Sudanese. Its pioneering land lease agreement ensures that the local community receives royalties from the development and benefits from the business’ continued success. SSBL, through SABMiller, is one of the largest private sector contributors to the South Sudanese economy, paying excise tax at both national and state level.

Local barley sourcing

Zambia - locally produced barley

In February 2011, consumers of clear beer in Zambia were able to taste the first brew made from high quality locally produced barley (the major ingredient in the production of clear beer). The project was successfully piloted by Zambian Brewries in 2009 and established the capability of farmers in Zambia to produce a high yielding, high quality crop.

The project was significantly expanded in 2010 when the first commercial crop was grown by 14 farmers from Mkushi, Mpongwe, Chisamba, Lusaka and Mazabuka.

About 1,600 hectares of irrigated land were planted in April and May of 2010 with a yield of 6.5 tons per hectare. This represented about 10,500 tons of barley or 8,500 tons of malt. The barley is used in the production of the company's premium clear beer brands - Mosi Lager, Mosi Gold, Castle Lager and Carling Black Label.

Water provision for local communities

Through our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) activities we seek to provide local communities with clean water or to treat waste water so it can be used for irrigation or other purposes. In Africa, a number of our operations have established water distribution projects to provide local communities with clean, drinkable water. We currently have projects in Tanzania, Mozambique, Lesotho, Swaziland, Southern Sudan and Uganda.
