Half a million zloty set aside for social aid

It is the fourth edition of the contest for projects within the social initiative "Warto być za!" [It Is Worth It!] Kompania Piwowarska will allocate half a million zloty for organizations of public service, which implement daily projects supporting people excluded because of poverty. A debate specifically organized for this purpose was set to discuss the common actions of businesses and the Third Sector.

The inauguration of the Fourth edition of the initiative "Warto być za!" was combined with the debate "Do the actions undertaken jointly by the business sector and organizations of public service have a chance to change the fate of the socially excluded?" Sister Małgorzata Chmielewska from Fundacja Domy Wspólnoty Chleb Życia, Professor Jolanta Szaban, the Spokesman of Kompania Piwowarska Paweł Kwiatkowski, and Magdalena Maruszczak from KPMG tried to find the answers to this question.
"We are slowly becoming a civic society. Businesspeople are also citizens of this country, and thus have responsibilities towards it. If we want to create a true civic society, we need to care about those who are in greatest need," said Sister Małgorzata Chmielewska.
The discussion yesterday was preceded by a presentation of research by Pentor Research International done for the social program "Warto być za!" "We do realize that as a strong representative of the business sector we are responsible for our environment," said Paweł Kwiatkowski, Spokesman of Kompania Piwowarska.

Experts, together with the Program Council, public opinion, and local communities will make a decision regarding funding in the contest on the basis of the projects. "It is of the utmost importance to us to continue actions which truly change the picture of exclusion and support real people with very real problems," commented Małgorzata Walędzińska, CSR Manager of Kompania Piwowarska.
Experts will be instrumental in the first stage of the assessment of projects. Their knowledge regarding social exclusion and their familiarity with the instruments stimulating or preventing exclusion will allow for diligent and meritorious verification of projects. Next, the Program Council of "Warto być za!" will select 15 finalists out of the projects previously qualified by experts and subject them to a public vote. Voting can be done by going to the website of the initiative www.warto.eu or by text messages. This combined process will allow for the selection of the 7 best projects.
It is worth to apply
From July 1 to August 31, 2009 public service organizations from all over Poland may apply for funding for the socially excluded. Monies will be granted in two contest categories, differentiated by the amount of funding: 100 K zloty, and 50 K. The 7 best projects selected will be realized for the sum of half a million zloty. Among others, the homeless, unemployed with low professional qualifications, children and youngsters from dysfunctional families or with no families, as well as the handicapped may become beneficiaries of the assistance programs entered into the competition. So far, nearly 230 organizations have taken part in the contest. 299 winning projects have been funded with the amount of 4.5 M zloty. Various assistance actions realized through those projects helped directly or indirectly some 11,000 people. Among the beneficiaries were the homeless, unemployed, children from dysfunctional and disfavored families, the handicapped, and single mothers. "The social initiative ‘Warto być za!' assists people in need. From the point of view of a given organization, every amount allocated to the realization of the project is precious, regardless of the size of the funding," said Sister Małgorzata Chmielewska, President of Fundacja Domy Wspólnoty Chleb Życia.
Powiślańska Fundacja Społeczna, which has assisted more than 120 people, socially marginalized due to their poverty, is one of the winners of the contest. Apart from participating in programs, the socially marginalized also take part in several workshops and therapy sessions. "We have been trying to show them that normal life is possible. Due to the financial support provided us, we have been able to offer them a broad spectrum of actions influencing their life situations," said the project coordinator Katarzyna Pakuła. The program involved whole families, both parents and children. Standards of desired behavior have been presented to all members within a family. As phrased by the coordinator, "That's why there's a chance they will be adopted."
Projects that supported single mothers, the handicapped, and unemployed were also among the winners of the 3rd Edition. In early July this year, an integrative playground for children was opened in Chodzież.
