Commitment to education and development of teachers' capacities
- Backus Virtual School forms strategic alliances with the Cayetano Heredia University, USAID and Cisneros Foundation.
Lima, April 8th, 2009 - Backus Virtual School begins the year by giving four courses to teachers of public and private schools nationwide in the cities of Lima, Cusco, Arequipa, Chiclayo, Trujillo, Pucallpa, Piura and Huancayo. The goal of these courses is to provide the teacher with innovative and creative tools for education.
These training programs began last March, thanks to the strategic alliances developed among the Cayetano Heredia University, USAID, and Cisneros Foundation of Venezuela through its program AME (Teachers in Education Update) and the educational program Backus Virtual School.
"Reading and Writing" is the first course that began during this first trimester of the year, oriented to strengthen the teaching performance in the first three grades of elementary education, in addition to being in accordance with the National Educational Program of the Education Ministry.
Also, the courses "Communication and Scholar Organization" and "Appropriation and use of Information Technologies (IT) in elementary education", supervised by the Metropolitan University of Venezuela and the University of Latin America and the Caribbean of Venezuela, respectively, started on April 6 in alliance with AME.
It is worth noting that Backus Virtual School, through its Virtual Classroom, will present an original course this year: "Teachers as promoters of a Healthy Lifestyle". This new program seeks to promote healthy lifestyles in the school, to make known the significance of adolescents development and their environment, and also, to guide teachers in their interaction with students as well as give them hints to resist group pressure, among other factors that affect the adolescents' development at this stage of their growth.
Mrs. Malena Morales, Sustainable Development Director of Backus, stated, "All our courses last between 12 and 24 weeks and their goal is to improve teachers' capacities and skills by means of a methodology that combines group work, collaborative learning and tutorship."
On the other hand, she pointed out that over 3,000 teachers have benefited through the Backus Virtual School educational program on the last two years. "Only in the fourth trimester of the year 2008 over 200 teachers were trained and graduated in the virtual courses."
During the months of September to December 2008, the courses "Ethics in school" and "Education for peace and conflict resolution" were given by the Metropolitan University of Venezuela and the University of Latin America and the Caribbean of Venezuela, respectively, where Peruvian teachers managed to achieve the first places in Latin American level, highlighting the project developed by professors Gustavo Guillermo Roca Velásquez, Maitza del Rosario Ticona Arroyo and Oscar Antonio González Haro, of the educative center Antenor Orrego of Trujillo, who achieved the first place in the course "Ethics in school." Also, standing out, the teachers Anyela Bejarano Herrera, Martha Luz Velarde Paredes and María del Carmen Fernández Urquizo, from College 41026 María Murillo of Bernal de Arequipa, managed to achieve second place in the course "Education for Peace and Conflict Resolution."
For this reason, the Backus representative stated, "The results achieved by the teachers that participate in our program are very encouraging, they show not only their interest in a constant training but also that they are permanently seeking to generate changes in students and their environment, with the implementation of these projects in their schools."
