Cheers to a Juba First!
10 December 2008
SABMiller Africa announces today, the latest in its growing portfolio of African investments. The new beverage plant situated in Juba, capital of Southern Sudan brings to 35 the number of operations SABMiller Africa has invested in across the continent to date.
This new facility offers the capacity to brew clear beer and manufacture carbonated soft drinks. Brewing operations will be fully functional in February 2009 and production of soft drinks will commence shortly thereafter. The local Juba community has a land lease agreement with SABMiller that will ensure they receive royalties from the manufacturing development, the first of its kind in Southern Sudan. Communities around Juba also stand to benefit significantly from the creation of employment and through indirect commercial and related activities and support services.
The community surrounding the facility will receive a further enhancement to the quality of their lives through access to clean, safe water from the Nile, which is the main water source for manufacture by the business.
"We are committed to delivering high quality and affordable products while delivering consistent growth in a country like Southern Sudan, which has immense potential," says Mark Bowman, Managing Director SABMiller Africa.
The approximate US$37m investment has considerably more than an economic impact as it will create employment for hundreds of Sudanese locals once manufacturing commences and has already employed a large amount of skilled labour in the construction of the plant. Further investments are also planned to upweight capacity and develop the route to market assets and capability during the next year.
SABMiller Africa believes that through the strength of its brands, operational capability and investment for growth, it can ensure a sustainable and growing business that also benefits the communities it operates in.
