Compañía Cervecera Invests €2.2 Million in Actions that Contribute to the Sustainable Development of Canarias

The company’s Sustainable Development Report for 2013 reaffirms its commitment with the environment and its surroundings for more than ten years
 

- The activities developed by the company brings an added value to the economy of around €182 million

- Among their achievements, it is worth mentioning the improvement of energy efficiency, resulting in a 9% decrease in water consumption and a 4% decrease in electricity consumption
 

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, October 31st, 2013.- Compañía Cervecera de Canarias invested €2.2 million last year, equivalent to 12% of its operating profits, in actions aimed to promote sustainable development in the Islands.

As it was reflected in last year’s report, these initiatives are aimed to reaffirm the environmental and social commitment carried out by Compañía Cervecera de Canarias for the last ten years, and to contribute to the maintenance of its environment and the stimulation of economic activity in the Islands. In order to do that, the company has integrated this sustainable development into its business strategy.

Last year’s data highlights the multiplying effect of the investments and operations carried out by Compañía Cervecera, generating a financial value of €133.7 million, mainly distributed among suppliers, employees, shareholders and public administrations.

It must be added that Compañía Cer­vecera’s activities have been directly or indirectly responsible for creating around 7,000 jobs, so the total added value to the economy is around €182 million, according to independent surveys on the influence of the beer sector on the economy.

Specifically, part of this contribution is linked to the actions developed in the hospitality sector through programmes carried out in many municipalities of the islands to promote its revitalization. This includes cultural, leisure, agricultural or support of non-profit organisations.

Less consumption of water and electricity

Among the measures adopted within Compañía Cervecera de Canarias’ sustainable development policy are improved efficiency of water and electricity consumption.

In this case, the company has achieved a 9% reduction in water consumption in the past year, which means a cumulative reduction of 17% over the last three years. This has been possible thanks to the implementation of new recording devices and control software, as well as using the condensation water for cleaning and irrigation.

As far as energy is concerned, during last year there was a 4% reduction in electricity consumption, a figure especially relevant considering there have been rises in recent years.

Thanks to these results, there has been a 7% reduction of energy consumption over the last three years, along with a 10% reduction in fuel consumption.

All this results in a 21% reduction of CO2 emissions over the last three years.

Packaging and waste

Packaging and waste management is one of the areas that supports the company’s environmental commitment, especially in a place like the Islands where there are significant deficiencies in waste collection and adequate facilities for recycling, making it necessary to intensify efforts in order to reduce waste in packaging, before and after consumption.

In this area, there has been a joint effort with packaging suppliers, as well as a complete separation of packaging waste generated in the production process.

In turn, the improvement of returnable packaging is one of the priorities of Compañía Cervecera, taking into account that the usage of reusable formats reached 58%, a much higher percentage than the average Spanish brewing sector, which is currently 47%.

Another aspect of the plan focuses on recovery and waste reduction, resulting in a recycling rate of 97%. At the same time, Compañía Cervecera continues investigating ways to increase that percentage.

Community development

Contributing to the development of the community is another important issue for Compañía Cervecera, through projects in the hospitality sector, tourism, rural and landscape development , sports, and supporting NGOs.

Among these initiatives is a collaboration with city halls and industry associations to expand a programme supporting the hospitality sector in Canarias, in an attempt to revitalize this fundamental sector of the economy and the job market which has seen a decline in consumption.

On the other hand, last year Compañía Cervecera started a corporate volunteer programme where employees carried out volunteer activities in Aldeas Infantiles’ facilities.

The company’s collaboration with the Deporte para Todos project (sports for everyone) has been renewed for another year, designed by the Asociación Deportiva para las Personas con Discapacidad Club Ademi (Sports Association for People with Disabilities Club Ademi) to promote sports for people with disabilities in the south of Tenerife.

In addition, the company provides internship opportunities, as well as external classes in business and technical schools.

The company has implemented more than 30 initiatives to support sporting and musical events, and continues to take part in music festivals.

Responsible consumption

 The promotion of responsible alcohol consumption is one of the main priorities for Compañía Cervecera, which relies on a strict code of self-regulation, while providing training on safe alcohol consumption practises to its employees.

Additionally, the company spearheads training initiatives in this subject targeting the sales and marketing sectors, and monitors all of its advertising through an internal committee and an external auditor who is tasked with ensuring compliance with self-regulatory codes.
