Backus Will Invest S/. 3.8 million in Infrastructure Works in Arequipa

26 March 2013

- The investment will be made within the framework of the Public Works Tax Deduction Law
- The constructions will be carried out in Fernandini Avenue and Tahuaycani Avenue in Sachaca, with the goal of improving vehicle and pedestrian traffic
- This urban improvement will directly benefit more than 118,000 citizens
- The construction company is planning to begin construction of the road infrastructure at the end of April

Lima, March 19th, 2013 - Backus and the municipality of Sachaca signed an agreement for the execution of a road infrastructure project, within the frame of the Law 29230: “Law that encourages Regional and Local Public Investment with the participation of the private sector”, which allows private companies to execute works of road infrastructure against their taxes.

The improvement works that will be carried out in Fernandini Avenue and Tahuaycani Avenue include the laying of an asphalt layer, the construction of paths and contention walls, and the installation of a storm drainage system and sewage system with pipes for water and drainage, which will improve the traffic of vehicles and pedestrians in this area of the city.

It is worth mentioning that the Backus factory in Arequipa is located in the Variante de Uchumayo, in the Sachaca district. It’s contiguous to Fernandini Avenue and Tahuaycani Avenue, which are in poor condition. They also lack a drainage and sewage system in order to drain the water during the rainy season, when they usually get flooded. Consequently, traffic is interrupted in those avenues.

Emilio Diaz Pinto, Mayor of the Sachaca district, pointed out, “It is planned that this urban improvement will directly benefit more than 118,000 citizens in the district. Because in addition to preventing the flooding of roads, there will be less wear on the cars driving along and a saving of transportation time, as well as the reduction in the risk of traffic and/or pedestrian accidents.”

For her part, Mrs. Malena Morales, Backus Director of Sustainable Development and Corporate Matters, said, “The total investment done by Backus for these works of road infrastructure in Sachaca reaches S/. 3,824,715.60, which will allow for the improvement of vehicle and pedestrian traffic in this area of the city of Arequipa.”

It is worth remembering that Backus led and executed the first infrastructure works in the country, within the framework of the Public Works Tax Deduction Law in the Ate district, in Lima, where its production plant is located. It has been participating in the execution of the Chilina Bridge, in a consortium with Interbank and Southern.

The law 29230 was created to reduce the infrastructure gap in the country and to promote private investment. The projects carried out under this investment plan allow a number of benefits, including facilitating the management and freeing the administrative burden to local and regional governments, generating strategic alliances with these authorities, and allowing private companies to decide where they are going to invest their taxes, directly benefiting the community where they operate.

The construction company hired for the implementation of these works is Luima S.A.
It’s a company from Arequipe with experience in the execution of traffic infrastructure projects and sanitation. Luima S.A. plans to elaborate the technical files of the Fernandini Avenue and Tahuaycani Avenue during March and April, and will start these works at the end of April, when the rainy season finishes.
