- The main areas of action are the efficient use of water, the reduction of energy consumption, the implementation of a development strategy for the packaging and the recovery of waste

- The actions implemented are within the bid for sustainable development that the company has been working on

Canary Islands, March 18th, 2013. - Guacimara Medina, the Deputy Minister of Environment of the Government of Canarias, visited the Tropical factory in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria today and had a chance to learn firsthand the latest developments regarding the environment and the measures implemented by Compañía Cervecera de Canarias in its production process.

During her visit, the company managers explained that the bid for the protection of the environment and sustainable development are among the priorities Compañía Cervecera de Canarias has been working on for years to ensure the efficient management of energy resources in the facilities in Gran Canaria as well as in the factory in Tenerife.

Throughout the visit, Guacimara Medina highlighted the sensibility and the awareness of Compañía Cervecera with the environment, as reflected in its sustainability plan, describing it as very ambitious and meticulous, and, as she pointed out, “it shows an increasing commitment in this matter.” A matter she described as important for the people in Canarias towards a better use of the resources and an efficient use of the water, the energy, the waste and the packaging.

She also pointed out that it is essential for the Deputy Ministry of Environment to have examples of good practices like this in order to implement these initiatives in other industries and companies in the Islands. In this sense, she valued its commitment to the environmental impact, the generation of waste and the improvement of the product during its production process. These elements, as she explained, are key to the success of Compañía Cervecera.

The efficient use of water, the reduction of energy consumption, the implementation of a strategy of sustainability for the packaging that encourages the use of returnable containers and the application of a policy of recovery of waste are the main lines of action Compañía Cervecera has been working on.

During the meeting, attended also by the Regional President and Vice President of Asinca, Andrés Calvo and Eugenio Castillo, the executives of Compañía Cervecera pointed out that the company is making a great effort in making an efficient use of the energy, reducing its impact and using cleaner sources of energy.

All this, they pointed out, is intended to achieve economical and resource savings as well as the reduction of greenhouse gases, contributing to promote a more sustainable development.

The actions carried out have allowed Compañía Cervecera de Canarias to reduce 4% the consumption of energy last year, which nowadays is 130,054 megajoules per hectolitre produced. Also, the continued implementation of these measures allowed a reduction of around 7% in the last three years.

Another line of the efficient use of energy has focused on the reduction of CO2 emissions. In this area, the data shows a reduction of 6% in the consumption of fuel. The results obtained in the last three years show more remarkable results, achieving a reduction of 30% in the emissions.

According to Compañía Cervecera, in order to maintain the progress, and improve it, it is necessary to keep moving forward in the improvement of the energy efficiency. To do that, it has taken on the challenge of reducing the consumption of energy up to 100 megajoules per hectolitre of beer produced by 2020.

Action programme

Within the wide action programme aimed at minimising the impact in the environment, Compañía Cervecera has developed a process of global approximation to manage the energy and the emissions. In this case, its actions are focused mainly on controlling aspects such as the fabrication of containers and packaging, the transportation and the refrigeration of products.

Another field in which it’s working to implement the efficiency of the operations is the improvement of the measuring systems, the investment in new technologies, as well as raising staff awareness about the responsible use of natural resources.

Last year, the most relevant actions were focused on a comprehensive analysis of the energy consumption, by areas and by individual premises, suggesting very specific interventions that, on the other hand, have had a visible impact in the consumption.

Another measure has been the implementation of new systems for energy management, reducing the intervals of measurement and increasing the rigour in the control of consumption.

The substitution of evaporative condensers and the CO2 evaporator by more efficient ones and the installation of an automatic deaerator in the refrigeration units contributed to better outcomes.

On the other hand, Compañía Cervecera has carried out a complete audit of the cooling system in its factories, and at the same time, it has introduced innovations in specific points of the production chain. In this sense, the steam pressure and the wort boiling time have been reduced, as well as the insulation of pipes with hot and cold fluids.

The bid for a sustainable strategy for the packaging and promoting the use of returnable packaging are among the goals of Compañía Cervecera, which, last year, commercialised 59% of its products in returnable packaging, a percentage higher than the national average, situated 11 points below.

On the other hand, Compañía Cervecera is carrying out a policy of waste recovery, mostly organics. The 13,693 tons of bagasse, yeast and dust were sent to 176 farmers and stock breeders for agricultural use. Also, despite the existing recycling limitations for some residues in Canarias, the percentage of recycling was 97%.
