20 November 2012
Thursday, November 15, 2012. The British Minister of Foreign Affairs for Latin America, Hugo Swire, visited today the offices of Industrias La Constancia, which is a subsidiary of the SABMiller plc. group.
As part of the British coalition Government´s interest in creating alliances with Latin America, this visit was scheduled within the framework of the recent inauguration of the new U.K. Embassy in El Salvador, which since its first day has been working hard to encourage and promote commercial and diplomatic relationships to increase the levels of trade and investment between the United Kingdom and El Salvador.
Industrias La Constancia is a subsidiary of SABMiller plc., which is a British based company that has been present in El Salvador since 2005.
The Minister met with the ILC President, Carlos Habencio Fernández, and his Executive Committee in order to learn about his experiences as well as his perspectives regarding the local business environment and the general existing perceptions of El Salvador from a foreign investor´s point of view.
“As foreign investors, we feel the opening of a new U.K. Embassy is a very positive thing, since the presence of a diplomatic representation will provide great support to the development process in El Salvador, as well as to British companies based in the country; it will also help to promote new investments and commercial ties between both countries”, stated Carlos Habencio Fernández, President of ILC.
SABMiller is one of the leading beverage companies in the world, with over 200 brands and more than 70,000 employees in over 75 countries. In El Salvador, ILC is a centennial company with 1,650 direct employees, although it is also an indirect source of employment for a further 61,250 people; these jobs are mostly generated through Micro and Small businesses linked to the company, and are an incredibly important source of development for El Salvador´s economy.
Overall, the employment generated by ILC represents 2.5% of the country´s Economically Active Population (EAP), while its value chain is approximately 1% of the national GDP.
Minister Swire´s visit to ILC is a clear show of support from the British Government to said country´s investment in El Salvador. The visit included a guided tour of the beer production plant, which is considered to be the number 1 facility in SABMiller´s World Ranking for efficiency and quality.
