The finished facade of Huaca de la Luna will be presented (Translation)
23 January 2012
Trujillo, January 18th, 2011.- With the purpose of evaluating the achievements attained in 2011 and appreciate the new discoveries, the main donors of the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna archaeological project gathered with the authorities of the National University of Trujillo and the Huacas del Valle de Moche Trust.
The World Monuments Fund (WMF) was represented by Mrs. Pérez de Cuéllar, President of the WMF Peru, and on behalf of Backus attended Mrs. Malena Morales Valentín, Director of Sustainable Development and Corporative Matters. On behalf of National Fund of Fondo Nacional de Capacitación Laboral y de Promoción del Empleo (Fondoempleo) attended Mr. Guillermo Rebosio, Executive Secretary of the institution.
On this occasion, the new archaeological discoveries and the conservation works carried out in the Plaza Ceremonial of Huaca de la Luna were presented, highlighting the total recovery of the main facade of the monument. As it is known, it consists of seven steps completely decorated with polychrome reliefs which, after 14 years of diligent works, have been completely freed of the rubble that covered it for more than 1,200 years. After a long research and conservation process, visitors will be able to appreciate the main facade in all its glory, revaluing the main sacred monument of the Moche.
Also, other discoveries found in Plaza Ceremonial will be revealed. These discoveries required the scientists of the National University of Trujillo to rethink the ideas they had about its shape and better understanding the function it had in such an important space, related with ceremonial events carried out close to the Huaca.
On occasion of the donor meeting, Backus Foundation showed its appreciation for Mrs. Marcela Pérez de Cuéllar for having been awarded with the "Watch Award," a prize awarded by Monuments Fund in October last year for her work in favour of the cultural patrimony of this country. Monuments Fund is the most important international private organisation dedicated to the conservation of the most valued monuments in the world.
During the meeting, Backus presented its allies with the Luis Hochschild Plaut Award. This recognition by the Instituto Peruano de Acción Empresarial - IPAE - is given annually to companies, which beyond their regular activities, have contributed to the development and progress and spreading of the Peruvian culture. The award, corresponding to 2011, was given to Backus in the framework of the CADE meeting carried out in Cusco in December last year. The reasons for this award were Backus contributions to research, conservation and social use of the cultural patrimony of the northern coast, and the promotion of a management model for the sustainable development, bin relation to Huacas del Sol y de la Luna (Trujillo) and Túcume Pyramids (Chiclayo).
That's why Backus wants to recognise that these achievements wouldn't have been possible without the determined and permanent commitment of its partners: the National University of Trujillo and the Huacas del Valle de Moche Fund in Trujillo; and the Túcume Museum and the Valle de las Pirámides de Lambayeque Fund, actors that allowed to show a better future for our cultural patrimony and the surrounding communities. Also, to the private and public institutions that have contributed during the last few years to achieve the recovery of our patrimony: the World Monuments Fund, the Fondo de Contravalor Perú Francia, the Presidency of Peru, Fondoempleo, the Plan Copesco Nacional y Mincetur, among its principal contributors.
