Backus protects the environment with polyethylene banners (Translation)

6 December 2011

- Backus is the first company in implementing this type of material in its advertising banners and it will be carried out in December
- This initiative joins to the implementation of the biodegradable oxo sheets in its beer, water and soda packaging and the use of sugar cane bagasse in the advertising materials.

Lima, December 2nd, 2011. - In its constant search for generating the least environmental impact in its operations, Backus brewery has started working with the polyethylene banner that uses natural gas, unlike the PVC that uses oil in its manufacture. As it is known, natural gas is a cleaner fuel and it has a smaller environmental impact because it uses less transformation processes.

Also, this banner friendly with the environment is recyclable, it doesn't contain chlorine and allows a better adherence of the ink in comparison with the PVC banner. It weights 75% less than the PVC banners and its carbon footprint is 60% smaller, contributing to looking after the environment.

In addition to this, this banner is printed with UV ink made of photoinitiators, monomers and oligomers. Once it is exposed to ultraviolet light through a special printer it goes from liquid into solid, avoiding the use of solvents in the drying process; this way, the ozone layer doesn't get affected in any moment of the process.

This new implementation joins other initiatives from Backus to protect the environment, like the use of biodegradable oxo additives in the plastic packaging that cover the beer packs, water and soda, the use of the bagasse in cane in advertising materials, the manufacture of smaller lids in water and soda pet bottles and the reduction in the use of steel in the beer lids. Also, the company is in constant process of reducing the environmental impact, calculating the CO2 emissions and increasing the efficiency of energy in the production plants, giving up fossil fuels.
