The participants had three months at their disposal to change their office operations and become as environmentally conscious as possible. At the Awards Ceremony, which was held on June 23rd, the Green Office Day, Dreher, Ltd. was awarded the "Green Idea Factory" Special Prize.
The awards for the winners of the 2011 competition were presented on June 23rd, the Green Office Day. Visitors of the event had an opportunity to get acquainted with products and services that help run an environmentally friendly office, were able to check out the good practices already implemented by the participants of the contest, and were given practical advice and operational tips.
At the awards ceremony the professional jury awarded Dreher Breweries, Ltd's project with the "Green Idea Factory" Special Prize, with the special mention that the program had an unexpected success in encouraging initiative.
Dreher Breweries, Ltd., as well as its parent company, SABMiller plc, has long been committed to the principles of sustainable development. In its recently published Sustainable Development Report for 2011, SABMiller's voluntary commitments are also very advanced in areas such as water and energy use, toxic chemical emissions, waste-management and packaging reuse and recycling. One such commitment is to improve the company's water efficiency by 25%, reducing consumption from 4.6 hectoliters of water per hectoliter of beer produced (hl/hl) to 3.5 hl/hl by 2015, compared to 2008. Another target is to reduce fossil fuel emissions from energy use by 50% per hectoliter to 6.85 kg/hl by 2020.
The global company, operating in 75 countries over 6 continents, is initiating a thorough energy efficiency inspection within the group, while continuing to reduce fossil fuel emissions from energy use. The company attaches great importance to examining the possibilities of further reuse for bottle labels. Additionally, the company will extend its environmental impact study method - successfully implemented in the UK, the Czech Republic, and Italy - to the rest of Europe.
Dreher Breweries, Ltd. has also expressed its commitment to sustainable development by participating in the Green Office challenge. The competition was a great opportunity for the company to gather and integrate employees' initiatives.
"We made our office operations greener by introducing the suggestion of e-billing to our financial department, by eliminating the use of PET-bottles through the installation of water filter stations, by increasing energy-awareness in operating the office equipment, and by issuing energy-conscious PR-brochures," said Mandy Fertetics, the head of the sustainable development department.
As part of the Green Office program, the company organized a series of activities, during which employees had the opportunity to learn tips and hear news about sustainability. The company also organized a photo competition for presenting the best initiatives implemented at home. The program, encouraging employee initiative, had a great success and proved that people can find environmentally friendly solutions in creative, cost-effective ways.
