SABMiller delivers strong UK performance

Drinkers still spending on affordable luxuries

SABMiller announces today that Miller Brands, its UK operation, has again delivered significant volume and value growth in a premium beer market which has declined by 2% over the same period.

In the year to 31st March 2010 Miller Brands delivered organic volume growth of 17% (excluding Ireland and Northern Ireland), with its key brands significantly outperforming the market. Czech beer Pilsner Urquell has grown volumes by 22% whilst Peroni Nastro Azzurro has seen 29% growth in the year, equating to around 23 million additional pints. Over the last three years Peroni Nastro Azzurro has delivered compound annual growth of some 36%. 

Miller Brands MD, Nick Miller says: "Throughout the recession, we've seen that consumers still want to treat themselves to affordable luxuries. Beers like Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Pilsner Urquell, which are differentiated by their quality, provenance and heritage, are ideally placed to fulfil this need."

Miller Brands has sought to further differentiate its beers through marketing activity not usually associated with the category, for example Peroni Nastro Azzurro's design partnership with Alessi and fashion collaboration with Antonio Berardi. It is also reflected in new draught distribution in bars which have never previously sold draught beer and through listings in stores which do not usually stock branded products.

Nick Miller continues: "We want to offer a premium drinking experience to consumers and by doing this we will drive value growth in the beer category. This will in turn benefit our customers."
