Backus introduces the second edition of the “Digital Teacher” Contest (Translation)

Lima, March 24 2010 - In accordance with the National Educational Project 2021 proposed by the Peruvian Government, and with the intention of contributing to the quality of the Peruvian education through the reduction of the digital and cognitive gap, Backus announced the second edition of the "Digital Teacher" contest, focused on active teachers or formation of schools in the public and private sector all over the country.

The contest, that had its first edition last year, where 244 competitors took part all over the country, is dedicated to the incorporation of the use of new Technologies of Information and Communication (TICs) in the educational and formative process, meaning the tool has an educational intention that allows the interaction between students and teachers, as well as reinforcing and providing information. This way, "Digital Teacher", joins the Government's efforts to promote technology at the educational levels, achieve the inclusion of new technologies and reduce the digital gap at the teaching level.

"Through this contest we want to motivate the qualified teachers to use TICs to develop digital educational resources with an educational approach that can be used as a teaching tool in schools. We know that there are teachers that are having very valuable experiences and that they offer their students new ways of learning that complement the actual traditional methods", says Felipe Cantuarias Salaverry, Vice-president of Approach and Corporate Matters of Backus.

There are five categories: audiovisuals, multimedia presentations, webquests, blogs and wiki; whose content should respond to a learning unit of the current educational curriculum at any thematic line.
Participants can be either teachers of initial levels, primary, secondary or special education as well as students at university level or pedagogical institutes, in the public or private sector individually or in groups (3 individuals maximum). It is expected to exceed the 300 digital educational resources received on the first edition, where 55% came from provinces and 45% from Lima.
In order to participate, teachers can either send their resources to the CISE-PUC offices:
Av. Universitaria 1801, San Miguel, or upload them to the website:, where they will also be able to access the conditions of the contest.

In the first phase of the contest, the resources will be reviewed by an Evaluation Committee which consists of a PUCP technical and pedagogical team, that will select five finalist in each category, having six points in mind: quality of resources, innovative content, utility and relevance of resources, functionality and viability of  resources, didactic design, graphic design.

The 25 finalists will be evaluated by members of a jury represented by the organisational institutions and sponsors, as well as specialists in educational technology, who will define and elect the winners as well as the commendations.
It is important to mention that this initiative has the support of the Ministry of Education, the National Educational Council, Businessmen for Education, and prominent companies such as Radio Programas del Peru;  El Comercio newspaper, Innomedia Group and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP) institutions that gather together to emphasize the work of the Peruvian teachers, promote the production of digital educational resources in basic education as well as motivate the collaborative work and create a network among teachers.
