With the Christmas party season well under way SABMiller, one of the world's leading brewers, has revealed the celebrities that beer loving Brits would most like to share a festive pint with. Stephen Fry and Cheryl Cole come out on top in the poll, just ahead Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson and actress Angelina Jolie.
Only 3% of Brits said that Gordon Brown would be their choice of Beer Buddy with reality TV's Kerry Katona (5%) being voted the least popular woman, closely followed by Victoria Beckham (6%).
"Our Beer Buddies poll confirms that Stephen Fry and Cheryl Cole are national treasures in the eyes of the public. A fantasy Christmas Dinner Party with Stephen, Cheryl, Jeremy Clarkson, Angelina Jolie, Helen Mirren and Barack Obama around the table is certainly one I'd want to be invited to!" said Bianca Shevlin, spokesperson for SABMiller.
The Beer Buddies poll forms part of a bi-annual survey by SABMiller into the beer drinking habits of 12 European countries. The remainder of the results, on subjects such as round-buying; drinking with colleagues and drinking on dates, will be released in a report in the New Year.
The Europe-wide research revealed distinct cultural differences in opinions of what different nationalities look for in a Beer Buddy. New US President Barack Obama was voted Europe's Beer Buddy of choice with other political figures also fairing well including Vladimir Putin who topped the Russian vote and Silvio Berlusconi who was the perfect drinking partner for 18% of Italians. Queen Elizabeth achieved her highest score in Russia, where 23% of respondents fancied a jar with Her Majesty.
The findings also highlight the differing tastes of British men and women when it comes to drinking buddies. Whilst Angelina Jolie may have finished second, only 13% of women said they'd like a beer with the Tomb Raider star. As well as Cole, women would rather buy a round for actress Helen Mirren (33%), author JK Rowling (28%), This Morning's Holly Willoughby and Eastenders' Babs Windsor (both 27%).
Will Smith was the man women would most like as a drinking partner with 31% women voting for the movie star, well ahead of David Beckham (9%), although fellow Brit James Bond actor Daniel Craig was the 5th most popular beer bloke. Across Europe, The US President won 29% of the female vote, just ahead of Brad Pitt (28%).
Twice as many men would like a drink with The Queen (16%) as with glamour model Katie Price (8%) with men also choosing Anne Widdecombe MP (9%) over the ‘I'm a Celebrity...' star. Outside of the UK, the pan-European research revealed that The Queen is even more popular with more Germans and Russians where more than a fifth wanted to share a beer with the British monarch.
"The survey highlights who the British public love in 2009, as well as those whose star is falling. There's no greater gauge than whether we would like to have a beer with them and the findings confirm that it's been a tough year for Gordon Brown and Kerry Katona," said Bianca Shevlin.
