Compañía Cervecera de Canarias invests 15% of their operating profits in sustainable development activities (Translation)

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, November 27th, 2009: Compañía Cervecera de Canarias has invested 3,3 million Euros in sustainable development activities, which  represents 15% of its operating profits compared with the 11% spent in the last fiscal year. Over the past five years, the company has allocated 14 million Euros to social responsibility policies focused on the extension of its commitment to suppliers, charitable activities, investments in the community, cultural and sports sponsorships and investment in environmental and social benefits for employees.

Social commitment is one of Compañía Cervecera de Canarias main guidelines and their commitment to practices that directly impact the Canarian archipelago is strengthened year after year. In spite of the current economic situation, the company has invested 3,3 million in sustainable development activities, which represents a 3% increase over the previous year. Compañía Cervecera not only promotes social policies, but also the implementation of this philosophy among its entire supply chain, extending its principles and values to companies with which it collaborates.

One of the pillars of Compañía Cervecera's sustainable development policy is the promotion of actions aimed to reduce its impact on the environment by reducing natural resources consumption, waste treatment and bottle recycling.

Natural resource consumption efficiency has remained high, resulting in a 9% reduction of the total electricity consumption, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of 457 Canarian homes. The 10% global decline in fuel consumption has prevented the emission of 698 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. Water consumption has also dropped 15%, which is equivalent to the annual consumption of 455 households.

In regards to its waste management, Compañía Cervecera de Canarias aims their actions towards a clear objective: to achieve a zero waste rating. The company uses 100% of its production waste (bagasse, malta dust and yeast) for the manufacture of fertilizer and organic feed intended for agriculture and livestock. Production figures have increased 123% and 19% respectively, which has generated savings between 21%-54% for farmers and between 50% and 70% for cattle farmers. The number of members in these two groups who have benefited has increased by 60% over the last year. This project has been able to slightly improve the waste reuse rate to 96,53%.

Compañía Cervecera not only manages their waste but also their packaging by promoting the use of returnable bottles because of their multiple advantages such as savings in manufacturing materials and the reduction on environmental impact and air pollution. With close to one million Euros invested, Compañía Cervecera de Canarias packages 64% of its products in returnable formats. This percentage is higher than the national brewery sector average of 51%.

Also, the company's social investment rose by 16% last year in order to cope with the basic needs increase of large social groups. Apart from collaborating with more than 30 NGOs that work towards the integration of different groups of people, Compañía Cervecera supports different programs that promote the island's development and are related to the environment, rural development and water and tourism management. It also sponsors numerous cultural and sporting activities. The presence of 21 students who do their practices within the company and over 600 hours of class taught in different schools by their professionals demonstrate the company's commitment to the training and competitiveness improvement of local businesses.
Compañía Cervecera de Canarias is aware of employee importance and human capital as a competitive advantage. One of the company premises is to maintain and motivate talent and, despite surrounding conditions, they have achieved high training standards with an 80% employee participation rate that translates into 15.433 training hours and an investment of 700 € per employee. Compañía Cervecera also offers several social benefits (or non-swage benefits) and facilitates employee and family protection through other measures.

Irresponsible alcohol consumption is another one of Compañía Cervecera's concerns. They enforce strict self-regulation systems in all their ads and work closely with the Spanish brewery sector in education and prevention publicity campaigns. In addition, the company has its own code that governs their publicity which is audited by an internal committee.
