Sorghum Farming For Lesotho Brewing Company
12 November 2009
Maseru, 10 November, 2009: Lesotho Brewing Company (LBC), an affiliate of SABMiller plc, has reported that it has established partnerships with local farmers in the districts of Leribe, Berea, Maseru, and Mafeteng, who are growing sorghum which the company will buy after the harvest season in 2010.
The company has indicated that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has played a catalytic role in identifying both the farming areas and farmers who are growing sorghum in the above mentioned districts. Five hectares of land will be planted in each of the four districts.
The Managing Director of Lesotho Brewing Company, Anthony Grendon, noted that, "The growing of a suitable sorghum variety in Lesotho will go a long way towards helping the farmers secure a market for their produce."
Sorghum is grown in other African markets where SABMiller has operations, and clear sorghum beer is already produced and consumed in countries such as Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia.
The Corporate Affairs Director, Ntahli Matete, reported that the farmers are very excited about the projects which will, hopefully, expand in the years ahead should it become successful. "Farmers in the four districts were ready to go to the fields when we delivered seed last week, and it is our hope that planting will be complete by end of November," said Matete.
