Grolsch plans on brewing beer from sustainably grown barley - Working on sustainable agriculture with growers - (Translation)
13 July 2009
On Saturday, the 27th of June, Grolsch will organize a sustainable agriculture-themed demonstration day for brewing barley growers in its Malthouse in Kloosterzande (Zeelandic Flanders). Grolsch has the ambition to eventually brew its beer from sustainably grown barley malt extract, for which productive cooperation with growers in the chain is essential. This will provide Grolsch with brewing barley of excellent quality and result in higher proceeds for growers. The demonstration day is meant to attract more growers in Zeelandic Flanders and increase their interest in and enthusiasm for a sustainable venture.
The Grolsch Malthouse in Kloosterzande cooperates intensively with a core group of growers in Zeelandic Flanders in order to permanently improve barley production and to create a proper chain structure, giving rise to the project ‘Growing Grolsch'. This project focuses on sustainable agriculture and offers major advantages for both growers and Grolsch: improved management, better quality and securing brewing barley availability.
Jos Haeck, manager of the Malthouse in Kloosterzande comments: "We share with our growers our pride and passion for our products. On the basis of sustainable agriculture, we would now like to extend our cooperation with them. After all, craftsmanship is mastership!"
A sustainable and responsible venture
Grolsch's activities surrounding sustainable agriculture are part of its sustainable and responsible venture program. Spearheads of the program for the upcoming year are:
- Alcohol: encouraging responsible alcohol consumption;
- Water: brewing more beer with less water;
- Energy & CO2: reducing energy consumption CO2 emission;
- Packaging: encouraging the reuse and recycling of packaging.
Would you like to know more about the project and the ambitions of Growing Grolsch? Then we would like to invite you to attend our demonstration day for brewing barley growers this Saturday, the 27th of June, from 2 PM.
