Volunteering boosts employment and health

In Poland, Kompania Piwowarska worked with an independent NGO, the Volunteering Centre, to analyse its employee volunteering programme. To understand, measure and manage the value of the programme by placing a monetary value on its social outcome, the company used the Social Return on Investment (SROI) calculation. The evaluation covered 19 projects carried out in conjunction with 18 non-profit organisations, looking at their long-term nature and the engagement of employees and local communities and reviewing tangible and intangible outcomes.

The results found that for every one Zloty invested through the programme, 5.81 Zlotys are returned to society through a range of benefits such as higher employment and better health. The 5.81 Zloty figure is considered high. Reports from stakeholders prove the programme was successfully conceived and deployed with employees given a choice of the causes to be funded.

'Lean and Green' deliveries in the Netherlands

As part of the Dutch government's Lean and Green initiative, our business in the Netherlands undertook to cut CO2 emissions from its distribution activities by 20% between 2007 and 2012. Other leading organisations making the same commitment included Hema, Coca-Cola and Douwe Egberts.

Royal Grolsch took a number of actions including changing its deliveries to coincide with times when the roads are quietest, typically at night. This has helped to reduce emissions by almost 22%.

Reusing carbon dioxide at Pilsen brewery

This year the Plzeňský Prazdroj, a.s. brewery in Pilsen commissioned a CO2 recovery station to capture and reuse CO2 and reduce on–site emissions. In the first year, the brewery saved 280 tonnes of CO2.

The emissions created during the fermentation and brewing processes are collected and liquefied. They can then be reused to create the controlled atmosphere needed for pumping and bottling beer. Not only does this initiative reduce CO2 emissions, but the return on investment is estimated to be only two years.

This year the company also undertook a number of initiatives to reduce the amount of electricity it uses – for example, updating 257 light fixtures and installing smart dimming technology. In total, these initiatives will conserve an estimated 257,000 kWh of energy; equal to the yearly energy consumption of over 400 average households.

Encouraging consumers to recycle

In a joint programme with Biedronka – the largest and fastest growing retailer in Poland – Kompania Piwowarska is working to increase consumer awareness of environmental issues and to promote the segregation and recycling of aluminium and glass packaging.

Implemented at 15 Biedronka outlets in 14 Polish towns, the programme has educated shoppers about their environmental impact and given consumers incentives for returning empy cans and bottles. For every five glass or aluminium containers a shopper returned, for example, they received a handy reusable eco-bag.

Over 10,000 eco-bags were given away in return for more than 10 tonnes of recycled glass and 13,000 aluminium cans weighing 300kg.

Lighter tops for Grolsch bottles

Famous for minimising its impact on the environment, Royal Grolsch is continuously making efforts to design sustainable, lightweight packaging, to reuse bottles and to encourage recycling.

In October 2012, the company changed its iconic swing-top bottle for a lighter version for all its returnable bottles. The new bottles are 17% lighter and contain 19% less steel, saving over 100 tonnes of steel a year and also cutting transport costs.

Ursus Breweries launches its first sustainable
development report in Romania

Ursus Breweries in Romania has launched its first sustainable development report to inform stakeholders about its sustainable development progress and initiatives held between 2010 and 2012.

To launch the report, the company teamed up with BIZ Magazine for its annual sustainable development seminar, during which it discussed sustainable development programmes and its progress and future plans with external partners and organisations including community leaders, students, media and local entrepreneurs. Ursus Breweries invited four beneficiaries to talk about the impact of the programmes in which they were involved. All offered strong testimonials as to how Ursus Breweries had made a difference to them and their communities.

Plzeňský Prazdroj, a.s. in the Czech Republic has received the 2013 European CSR Award for its work promoting responsible alcohol consumption. The independent jury comprising experts from NGOs, government and business was impressed by the company's innovative work – run in partnership with NGO, SANANIM – to help prevent irresponsible alcohol consumption at music festivals.

This award is further public recognition of the leading role of Plzeňský Prazdroj, a.s. in sustainable development. In 2012 it also won the titles of National CSR Champion in the European Business Awards, and employer of the year.

The responsible business industry leader

In Poland, Kompania Piwowarska has been named Responsible Business Industry Leader as the highest-placed consumer goods company in the Ranking of Responsible Companies published by the Gazeta Prawna Daily in partnership with the Responsible Business Forum and Kozminski University. The company also claimed second place in the overall ranking.

The award took into account five areas of performance – responsible leadership, dialogue with stakeholders, community involvement, responsible management and social innovation. This ranking is the only comprehensive list to assess the largest companies in Poland on the quality of their management of corporate social responsibility and covers more than 150 companies operating in Poland.

Turning waste into energy in the Czech Republic

This year, Plzeňský Prazdroj in the Czech Republic has worked on a number projects to help reduce its total energy use. One innovation is a device that turns draff (the grain left over after malted barley has been boiled and the liquid filtered out for fermentation) into a renewable fuel.

The brewery in Plzeň produces about 80,000 tonnes of draff every year. The new device dries the spent grains so they can be burnt in boilers to supply heat and electricity with lower carbon emissions. The processed spent grain is sold to the local energy supplier who uses it as a co-fuel in the combustion plant that supplies both the brewery and the local community. The project helps to reduce the heating plant's use of coal by approximately 10,000 tonnes a year – equivalent to 13,320 tonnes CO2 emissions.
