Our priorities: Waste
'Recycling waste labels from returnable bottles'
At Plzensky Prazdroj, we aim to recycle or reuse as much brewery waste as possible. This year, Plzensky Prazdroj generated 159,317 tonnes of waste, of which 98.77% was reused or recycled. For example, spent grains, yeast and other malting commodities are used as fodder in the farming industry; cullet, waste foils, cartons and scrap metal are completely recycled and dust from barley processing is used in the production of alternative fuel.
This year, we identified a unique way of using waste labels, which are washed off returnable bottles in the packaging process. Together with other organic wastes, the labels are composted, resulting in an industrial substrate used in landscaping and construction groundwork. In this way we save 400 tonnes per year of waste going to landfill that would otherwise not be reused.
However, we are not letting up on our efforts to find uses for other kinds of waste – we are working with the local Research Institute for Construction Materials to identify the most effective way of using waste kieselguhr. This filtration medium might be used as a binding agent in construction materials in the future. We are also testing the use of brewhouse trub (sediment from the brewing process) in the gasification process in our biogas plants.
