SAB's Ibhayi brewery clocks up 2 million accident free hours
24 August 2000
The project team at The South African Breweries Ibhayi brewery in Port Elizabeth today (August 24) clocked up an enviable construction record - 2-million accident free man hours.
"On a job of this size that is a remarkable feat, given the considerable pressure the team is working under to ensure the brewery comes on stream as scheduled. It requires considerable awareness from every one of the 1 321 people currently on site to avoid accidents, particularly when, in some instances there are 35 people working in an area of 30 metres by 7 meters, all at different levels," says Peter McLoughlin, SAB's general manager for the Eastern Cape region.
The record comes hard on the heels of the brewery's first beer brew this week and at a time when construction and commissioning is more than 97 percent complete.
