Tyskie Gronie Lager wins major award

23 April 2002

Polish lager brand Tyskie Gronie has been awarded the Champions Award in the International Lager Competition at The Brewing Industry Awards 2002. Judging, by a panel of professional brewers from across the globe, took place in Burton upon Trent in February and the results were announced and presented at The Guildhall, London on 16 April 2002.

Tyskie Gronie, which is brewed by South African Breweries' (SAB) owned Kompania Piwowarska in Tychy, Southern Poland, was up against 130 entries in the same award category, which included beers from over 30 countries.

The Brewing Industry Awards, which now take place every two years, are the most coveted awards in the brewing world. SAB's flagship brand in Africa, Castle Lager, also won the same Champion's Award at the last awards presentation two years ago.

Chief Executive, Graham Mackay said: "I am very proud that we have now received this prestigious award at the last two Brewing Industry Awards.

"It highlights our continual drive for top quality brewing around the world. Our performance in Poland and our other markets relies on producing consistently high-quality beer that is competitively priced. This latest award is an endorsement of our commitment to these goals and a measure of our achievement."

Notes to editors:

  1. South African Breweries plc (SAB) is the world's leading brewer in developing markets. Listed in London, SAB has interests in Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, Central America and Asia, and is the world's third largest brewer overall by volume with 108 breweries in 24 countries and over 31,000 employees.
  2. In the year to 31 March 2001, SAB generated US$646 million pre-tax profit from a turnover of US$4.184 billion. SAB is listed on both the London and the Johannesburg stock exchanges.
  3. SAB entered Poland in 1996 by buying 69% stakes in breweries in western and southern Poland. These were modernised and combined into three breweries operating under Kompania Piwowarska SA in 1999, with a single distribution system for the Lech and Tyskie brands. The latter is the leading beer brand in a country that is one of the fastest-growing beer markets in Europe. Most recently, SAB introduced a new segment to the Polish beer market with Redd's, an alcoholic fruit beverage for the sweeter palate, which has already captured 38% of the market. SAB's brewing volume in Poland is over 7million hectolitres, approximately 30% of the total market.
