- The award was given in the city of Medellin, Colombia, within the frame “III Business Forum of the Global Compact in Latin America and the Caribbean: Responsibility and Sustainability”, organised by the Regional Center for Latin America and the Caribbean supporting the United Nations Global Compact
Lima, November 11th, 2013.- During the last edition of the 2013 Social Investment Pioneer Awards 2013, Backus was the only Peruvian company awarded with this important prize in the Inclusive Business category, with its project, “Formation of networks of small producers of hard yellow corn in the Jequetepeque valley”, which supports the competitiveness of 250 microentreprenuers, through the articulation and association of companies, for the creation and/or the strengthening of the production chains. This project is part of the programme “Progressing together”, started in 2008.
It is worth mentioning that this prize is awarded by the Principles for Social Investment Secretariat to companies of countries that signed the United Nations Global Compact and, hence, share the conviction that the business practices based in universal principles will contribute to the construction of a global market more stable, equitable and inclusive, and encourage more prosperous societies. The winners were announced at the Summit of Leaders for the United Nations Global Compact last September in New York and the award ceremony took place on November 7th in Medellin (Colombia).
Malena Morales Valentín, director of Backus Sustainable Development, attended the award ceremony and said, “It’s a great pride we feel in Backus after being awarded this important prize that recognises the work of the companies within the frame of the Global Compact principle. Since the beginning, the programme ‘Progressing together’ wanted to develop small producers that are ‘at the base of the pyramid’ and achieve its relationship with the company.”
Without a doubt, this fact constitutes a source of pride for national businessmen, as “Social Investment Pioneer Awards” recognises those companies that show leadership and innovation in the development of the communities and respond efficiently to social, economical and environmental impacts through sustainable initiatives of Corporate Social Responsibility in five categories: Responsible Business, Inclusive Business, Shared Value, Social Business and Strategic Corporate Philanthropy.
Other winners in the category of companies with more than 250 employees: Alpina from Colombia in the Social Business category; Movistar from Colombia in the Responsible Business category; Sayga from Sudan in the Shared Value category; Accenture from Uruguay in the Strategic Corporate Philanthropy category. In the category of companies with less than 250 employees, companies from Austria, Greece, Ecuador and Kenya won.
Union of Peruvian Breweries and Johnston, is the brewing industry leader in Peru. It has five decentralised production plants in Lima (Ate), Arequipa, Cusco, Motupe and Pucallpa; it also has a malt factory and a mineral water plant. It has a well-segmented portfolio of national and international brands that wants to satisfy consumers in more than 180,000 selling points throughout the country.
Backus works with a focus in sustainable development, with the goal of generating shared value with the people that are part of its value chain and the communities in which it operates. That is why all its initiatives and projects want to generate social inclusion and strategic alliances to favour the efforts and achieve a greater impact in economic, social and environmental terms for the society as a whole.
