Hand in hand with the Ministry of Women, Backus inaugurates its second nursing room in the Rímac district

30 August 2013

Lima, September 26th, 2013 - In order to improve the quality of life and ensure the health of its workers, Backus has opened its second nursing room in the Distribution Center in the Rímac district.

Also, supporting the government policies about the needs of working mothers in Peru, Mr. Julio Rojas Julca, Vice-minister of Vulnerable Communities from the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Communities, inaugurated this nursing room. It was created to provide a private space for nursing mothers, so they can extract and keep the breast milk in optimal conditions and contribute to a better nutrition for their children.

There are 142 women of child-bearing age who work in the Backus Distribution Center, located in the Rímac district, who could benefit from this nursing room.  Currently, there are 6 breastfeeding mothers, and 10 pregnant women who could potentially use of this room. This room improves the quality of life and the health of Backus female workers - CD Rímac.

It is worth mentioning that Backus was one of the first companies in the private sector that actively participated in the call made by the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Communities by opening its first nursing room in the Ate district in August  2011. Now a second nursing room has been opened, and the opening of a third nursing room in Arequipa city is pending.

In this respect, Bret Rogers, Vice president of Human Resources of Backus pointed out, “As part of our policy of Sustainable Development, the company supports the initiatives of the government that want to improve the nutrition of the lactating babies, who are the future of our country. It’s important for us that our working mothers have another incentive that allow them to reconcile their working and family life.”

The Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Communities, as head of  the Multisectoral Supervisory Commission in charge of ensuring compliance with Supreme Decree No. 009-2006-MIMDES, accompanied Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus and Johnston S.A.A today in the inauguration of its second nursing room- CD Rímac. This was the third activity carried out in the month of August in celebration of Breastfeeding Week in Peru.

It’s obvious that year after year, more women enter the job market, and their salaries help support the family economy. In this regard, the 2012 National Household Survey shows that in recent years there has been an increase of 6.8%, from 58.4% in 2001 to 65.2% in 20121, however, this increment in the female participation comes with a dual duty: Their jobs responsibilities as workers and their family responsibilities as mothers.

This way, we have to support and protect the right of working women to have children when they want and support maternity from the first days after the birth of their children. This is achieved by giving them the essential elements to maintaining life: a healthy and quality nourishment only provided by breast milk.
