Nile Breweries extends clean water to Kibaale farmers
17 April 2012
Sorghum farmers from Kibaale District today, join thousands of others across Uganda, to benefit from clean water provided by Nile Breweries Limited.
The brewing company handed a borehole to farmers in Kisiita Sub County, one of the three it has drilled for farmers this year, and brings the total number of boreholes to 11 in three years.
"We have provided two other boreholes to our farmers in Purongo, Amuru District and Ongiino in Kumi District," said Nick Jenkinson Managing Director Nile Breweries Limited, during the handover ceremony.
The company has provided the boreholes at the cost of UGX.235 million and they provide 64,882,400 litres of water to benefit an estimated 8,888 people.
According to the international and Uganda water ministry formula (300 people per borehole), the eleven boreholes would be projected to provide 3,300 people with 24,090,000 million litres of water per annum.
However, the social return on investment (SROI), study conducted by Nile Breweries in 2010, shows that the company's clean water project benefits were more than fivefold what it has invested.
"The study found that benefits to farmers, such as reduction of costs on health from water born diseases, were worth Uganda Shillings 5.6 for every Shilling spent on the boreholes," said Jenkinson.
In addition to savings on health expenditure, farmers benefitted in numerous ways by having a borehole in their midst. These included: cost saving on water treatment and purification; saving on patient days due to illness from water born diseases, cost saving on time lost looking for clean and safe water; and infrastructure subsidy of both community and government.
"This is part of the commitment of Nile Breweries and our parent company SABMiller, to sustainable development," said Onapito-Ekomoloit Corporate Affairs Director Nile Breweries Limited.
The boreholes provided to the farmers, are just part of a comprehensive corporate social investment package provided by Nile Breweries to communities, within which it operates over and above business transactions.
Nile Breweries in the previous two years provided clean water, to selected farming communities of Amuria, Budaka, Bukedea, Dokolo, Lira, Katakwi, Soroti and Oyam District.
Nile Breweries Limited is Uganda's beer market leader and a subsidiary of SABMiller plc. the second largest brewer globally.
