Compañía Cervecera adopts policies of responsible consumption of water. These policies reduced the consumption by 9.3% last year (Translation)

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, March, 21st, 2012.- Compañía Cervecera de Canarias has reduced their consumption of water by 9.3% during the last 12 months, in line with its policy of promoting efficient use of water.

With this action, in line with the approach defended by the United Nations, the company renews its support for the sustainable use of water, one of the most important finite resources, made clear by tomorrow's celebration of World Water Day 2012.

Compañía Cervecera stresses the importance of helping to maintain a fundamental asset like water and this interest should be stronger in companies that should make the responsible use of water one of its priorities. Lack of water represents a potential risk for the development of the business as well as for the islands, so it's necessary to collaborate along these lines..

As proof, last year, Compañía Cervecera consumed 4.28 litres of water for every litre of beer produced. This quantity is slightly smaller than the quantity used last year of about 4.72 litres.  With this reduction, the company continues moving forward in the goal established in previous years of reducing the consumption of water, establishing a goal of 3.4 litres by 2015, which represents a 30% reduction.

To reach this goal, the company has implemented policies designed to control water consumption, establishing consumption goals by area and even by machine.  Some noteworthy initiatives include optimizing the lubrication in the bottling line by using products that use less water, and recuperating water for a later using.

Also, some of the major programmes in the packing area have been optimized, like the bottle washer, the refrigeration of the filling machine's vacuum pump and the washing of crates. 

This year, Compañía Cervecera is planning to take more actions in this vein by increasing the number of water and electricity measuring points, and installing steam metres to measure consumption by area.  This will allow the consumption information to be accessed in real time, making a better, more efficient system overall.

Additionally, the company is undertaking other actions like periodic evaluation of the water situation in its area of influence, and of the water consumption of its suppliers.
