Backus implements new caps for plastic bottles (Translation)

14 July 2011

New technology helps to reduce environmental impact

- Agua de Manantial San Mateo's personal bottle format is the first product that will soon adopt the short cap
- This technology reduces plastic consumption in bottles' caps and PET resins.
- Backus will adopt this environmentally friendly technology for all its carbonated beverages and waters

Lima, July 11, 2011. - As part of its Sustainable Development policy, Backus will soon implement a new technology in plastic bottle cap production, making the caps shorter and therefore reducing plastic consumption by 8% per year, the equivalent of 48 tons.

The adoption of this short cap reduces not just plastic (polypropylene) consumption for caps, but also for PET bottles, since it requires a smaller thread in the bottle's finish. In this case, there is a 5% reduction in the material used, equivalent to 286 tons per year.

The change will be applied to 600 ml Agua de Manantial San Mateo bottles effective in August, and it will be implemented in September in other personal bottle format brands (Guaraná, Viva Backus and Maltin Power). The change will be launched around November for large formats in all products.

The joint investment of Backus and its PET bottle and plastic-cap suppliers adds up to approximately US $800,000, which included adapting the injection, blowing and bottling line processes.

The implementation of this new technology allows the bottling of highly carbonated beverages in both large and small formats at high speed, while keeping sealing levels to guarantee their quality.

Carlos Miranda, Backus' purchasing manager, noted, "In addition to these initiatives of plastic and PET resin usage reduction, since the beginning of the year Backus has managed to lighten the weight of our PET bottles in all our water and soda brands, achieving a reduction of 672 tons of PET resin per year, or 12% of total consumption."

These actions are part of the commitment of Backus Peru, a leader in change among SABMiller's operations in Latin America, to contributing to sustainable development and environment protection.
